"Are you happy?" Jonathan asks him five years after he married the man of his dreams, the man he still loves with all his heart to this very day.
Clark looks at his father in surprise, a shy smile darting over his rosy lips. "Yes," he answers uncertainly, and when Jonathan raises a brow in response to the that uncertainty he hears clearly in his voice, Clark releases his true happiness and beams. "Yes, Dad, I'm very happy! I'm happier than I ever thought I would be before I met Lex! Dad, I've got a great life, a family who loves me," his voice drops to a hushed whisper even though there's no one else around in their barn, "a world who respects and needs me as its hero and which I've not let down too many times yet -- "
"You won't," Jonathan starts to say, but Clark isn't done.
His voice returns to normal, if a little louder than before, as he exclaims, "And a man who loves me as much as I love him and who would do anything for me!"
"Lex has turned Luthor Corp around," Jonathan admits and then winces as he realizes he spoke aloud.
Clark, however, jumps on his comment. "Yes, he has. Dad, he's doing so much good, more good than I thought he ever would! He's no longer trying to take over the world! He's doing all he can to help me protect it, and he knows my secret and has since long before we were married and has helped me to protect it and won't ever let anybody know about it! He'll never tell a soul just like I told you back when were dating!"
"You're babbling, son," Jonathan remarks, causing Clark to hush, but he, too, is beaming now. "You really are happy, aren't you?"
"Yes!" Clark cries triumphantly, and the smiles on both men's faces grow.
"Clark, Martha asked me to come get you two. She says dinner's ready."
Jonathan's grin grows even more as he watches his son run to his husband like he's still a lovesick pup. He watches them embrace and no longer fears hate or disgust growling inside of him. He notices his son only gives his husband a quick peck on his cheek instead of kissing full on the lips, and he knows why. He's the reason why, and he's ashamed suddenly to think that he tried every way he could to keep their union from happening.
Clark, he knows now, would not have been happy with any one else, not with Lana or Lois or even Miss USA. His son loves a man, but that man has given him a better future than either of them had had expectations that he might be able to gain. He has an education and a great job, even if it is in the city. He works hard as a reporter, harder to save the world, and has a home with some one who loves him as much as he does him to come to at night.
The world doesn't know his secret. He hasn't been tortured to death or ripped apart by scientists. Instead, his husband has a team of scientists who are constantly inventing new weapons to help him in his determination to save their planet, all while never knowing just who exactly they're helping. He has a man behind him who has enough wealth and power to keep him safe for many years to come, and Jonathan knows Lex will stop at nothing to keep Clark as safe as he can.
He knows. He remembers that one reporter who mysteriously disappeared back when the boys were just beginning to date. He might not always approve of Luthor's means, but he knows he will protect his son and will continue keeping him happy, as well. He has friends and a family beyond him and Martha. He'll still be happy and safe when they're long gone, and it's all because of Lex.
"Lex, may I have a word with you?"
He sees fear flicker in Clark's blue eyes as he looks back at him and sees Lex whisper something to him. Clark nods, murmurs, "I'll go set the table," and zips away, but not without another kiss on Lex's cheek.
"Mister Kent?" Lex asks, striding boldly forward and not letting any of his own fear or nervousness show. He carefully eyes the man who tried so hard to keep him out of his family and away from his son, the man who's always been determined to believe the worst of him just like the world.
"I . . . " Jonathan stumbles for words like he hasn't in a long time. He scratches the back of his neck, runs the same hand down his burly throat, and finally offers it to Lex with a wavering smile. "I wanted to apologize, Lex, and to thank you for making my son happy."
Lex's grin is wide and bold as he takes Jonathan's proffered hand without hesitation and shakes it. He could turn his back on him. He could refuse his apology. After all, Jonathan hasn't exactly been an easy opponent over the years Lex has known and loved his son, but Clark loves his father. Due to that love, there are few things Lex would like better than to be able to have Jonathan accept him with wide arms and love as Clark's mother has done. She accepted him long before they ever married as part of her child's family and life, but Lex has feared this moment with Jonathan would never come.
Their handshake is quick and firm. "That's, huh, it," Jonathan says, removing his hand and tucking it back into his jeans.
Lex still faces him with a calm smile. "Thank you, Mister Kent," he says, and he means the words as he turns away from him and ambles toward the house where the rest of their family is waiting. Jonathan might never hug him or accept him as family as Martha has done, but he has now given his acceptance of the love Clark and Lex share. That, for Lex, is enough for now, and he knows it's more than he and Clark had hoped for in years. He heads back to the man he loves, smiling all the way and knowing how bright their future is. Where love leads, after all, happiness will always follow.
