He walks into the office without his usual chirpy spirit that morning. His blue eyes are hidden by his wide-rimmed glasses, but if any one looked closer, they would see bloodshot pupils, darkening bags underneath his eyes, and a black ring forming around another eye. The effects of last night's fight aren't truly what's bothering him, however. He'll recover from them soon enough, and he did succeed in saving the world again, even if the villain did admittedly manage to use him for a punching bag for a sort time.

What bothers him instead, what's made his usual bright smile fade, is that he barely managed to crawl home in time to quickly kiss Lex before his love walked out the door on the morning of Valentine's Day. They managed to hug, kiss, and tell one another, "I love you," but then Lex was gone and he was alone. He ate his breakfast, that had grown cold after Lex had made it for him, drank his coffee, and managed to get about a half hour's worth of sleep before his alarm went off.

Now here he is, and he probably won't get another chance to see Lex until they get off from work this evening. Even then, there's a high likelihood that another global crises will pull away and they'll spend Valentine's alone or, at least, without each other. They'll be surrounded by people all day, but none of them matter. Clark can be in a sea of human faces and still feel alone without his Lex beside him, and he knows his fiance feels the same.

He literally pouts as the door shuts behind him. To his superior hearing, the sound seems to echo in the office, like the doom of a fate well sealed, but then before he can give much thought to the feeling, his boss is calling him. "There he is! Hey, lover boy! Get in here to your office and make some room so you can do some actual work!"

Clark looks up in surprise. Lois and the Chief are both waiting in his office, but what causes his blue eyes to widen in surprise behind his spectacles are not their annoyed faces but the sea of flowers he spies instead. He edges carefully into the room, unsure if he can trust his eyes. There are vases and bouquets of roses in every color he's ever seen, and his office smells sweeter than the cinnamon rolls his momma used to make on Sunday morning.

He turns slowly, taking in the scene. The Captain snorts, and Lois rolls her eyes. She's angry, he knows, because this is all for him while her desk sports only a dozen red roses. Amongst the yellows, purples, pinks, oranges, blues, and reds of the flowers, he spies other items, some smaller and some larger. There are boxes of chocolates, little boxes that conceal tiny presents, a new coffee mug, gift cards, little hearts, small plushies, and one enormous teddy bear sitting in his chair.

"You wanna explain this, Kent?" his boss growls from around his thick cigar, but Clark has other matters on his mind rather than answering the Chief.

He bends and plucks the card the teddy bear is holding. He opens it and swiftly reads the words written therein. The only signature is "Your Secret Admirer", but Clark knows the handwriting. He knows well from whom all these presents came. His smile is back, and it's bigger than it's been in a long time. For a moment, his eyes focus on the words "I love you" for in a room full of gifts, that small sentence, full of so much sentiment, still remains his most treasured present of all.

"Actually, Chief," he darts a glance at the clock on the wall, "I've got to get going."

"What?! Kent, you just got here!"

"This should be good," mutters Lois, but Clark ignores her, as he's grown accustomed to doing since he started dating Lex.

"I have a private interview with Lex Luthor this morning."

"Why didn't you say so?" Lois jumps from the spot on his desk she'd made, by pushing some of his presents in a tight cluster, to perch upon. "That scumbag is always hiding something! We'll get the truth out of him!"

"Hum, it's a private interview," Clark reiterates, and he hopes the heat he feels rushing into his cheeks isn't actually showing.

Chief nods. "Lane, I've got another report for you to do. Kent, this had better be good, and when you get back, I expect you to get all this cleaned out and tell your girlfriend not to be cluttering your office like this. You have to have room to do your dang work, not that you're ever actually here that much."

Clark presses his lips together and nods quickly. "Yes, sir," he manages after a fast minute. Then he's out the door and running, his heart beating so hard and joyously in his chest that he is reminded, yet again thanks to his love, of why some writers say that a heart is about to burst out of their character's chest. He doubts that's ever physically happened, but he certainly understands the meaning as he darts into an alley beside the Planet.

There, alone, he finally releases the squeal of delight he's been holding since seeing the array of gifts his beloved left for him. He jumps into the sky and zips toward LuthorCorp. For just a moment, he wonders if Lex will have time for him, but then he pushes that doubt aside. Lex always finds a way to make time for him, and even if they only get a little while together this morning, Clark already knows that this is going to be the best Valentine's Day yet. He wonders what Lex will do next year, because somehow, his baby always manages to top himself every Valentine's Day. He beams and zips even faster alone, eager, as always, to get back into the arms of the man he loves more than life.
