They used to whisper their excitement, alone in their bedrooms, as they made the first fragile explorations of each other's bodies and what it really meant to love. Later, they whispered for fear that they would be discovered, and when they were discovered, they whispered every night afterward for fear that they would be found out again. They could not stand their grandmother's disapproval or the way she accused them of being sick and twisted. Prue wanted to run away, but Piper would not leave her family. Still, she begged in her heart every time that she and her beloved sister made sweet love that there would come a day when they no longer had to hide.
That day did eventually come, but not in the way for which Piper had asked. Their grandmother was taken from them. The first time they made love after her passing, Piper screamed her elation, but later, when they reclined, slowly lowering back to mental ground after the ecstatic throws of passion, she could not stop herself from thinking that the Manor was too quiet and the reason why.
Their grandmother would never shout at them again, or condemn their love. She would not not because she had accepted them but rather because she had no more voice. She had no more life, and for the first time, Piper felt shame. She'd gotten her wish -- but at the cost of the grandmother they still loved.
Prue wondered later why Piper so quickly moved Phoebe in with them. She could not have known that it was to appease her lover's guilt, to give her a reason to whisper again, but her screams ceased and her cherished Piper, no matter how joyful or elated, is still whispering today.
