The heat from the early morning sun was already growing harsh when the seven men gathered together for another very special mission. Two gathered supplies while others discussed what was to be done and prepared for the day. The tracker shed out of his jacket, and others began to arrange their clothes. Only one did not speak.

Ezra carefully set up his chair and checked his own supplies. He delicately turned the cuffs of his jacket back down, slipped out of it, and laid it just as carefully onto his waiting seat. Still not speaking to the others, he quietly rolled up his sleeves and set to work. He deftly hit the nail before laying down the borrowed hammer, rolling his sleeves back down, lifting his jacket, and sprawling into his chair. He took a sip of his drink, then looked up with a raised eyebrow when he felt stares upon him. "What?" he asked, his Southern drawl as delicate and eloquent as ever.

"That wan't th' deal, Ez," Vin drawled while Josiah and Buck shook their heads. Chris squinted at the gambler, and JD watched in disbelief. Only Nathan continued his task at hand, not in the least surprised.

"If Ah remembah correctly, Mistah Tanner, our agreement was that Ah would do what Ah could to help your friend, Miss Nettles. Ah have done so. That board is in place. Now if you will kindly excuse me, mah throat is becoming parched in this horrid sunlight." He leaned back in his chair and enjoyed the cool alcohol coursing down his throat. His bottle hid the wry grin of his lips as he also took relish in Vin's annoyance.

Chris shook his head. "Shoulda just left him in town," he muttered from around his thick cheroot.

"Isn't there something you can do, Mister Larabee?"

"Why bother, kid? He'd just hide again moment our backs was turned. Weasels don't work."

"Neither do gentlemen of leisure, Mistah Larabee."

Buck snorted. "Some gentleman," he muttered.

Ezra smiled, a certain gleam in his green eyes. "That's not what Senorita Recillos said last night, Mistah Wilmington, but we gentleman do not discuss such passionate events." He again sipped his bottle while, cussing and fussing, four of the men went to work around him.

Behind him, Josiah shook his gray head. "Lord, have mercy on him."

Nathan finally looked up. "Don't you mean on us?"

"Neither the wicked or the sloths shall inherit the Earth," Josiah remarked as much as a warning to Ezra as an answer to the healer as he walked around him to join the others in working on Nettie's fence.

Ezra just grinned at them from around his bottle. "Ah'll worry about that when Ah expire, Preacher man, but mah expiration will most certainly not be coming soon or in the form of a stroke in this wretched sun."

Nathan shook his head. "If you were half as good with your hands as you were with your mouth, you might actually make a valuable member o' this team."

Ezra's eyes focused on the back of Nathan's retreating head as he joined the others on the fence line. "Ah'll remembah that, Mistah Jackson, the next time y'all need mah expertise in social graces to save you from anothah dastardly turn o' events."

"What we could use, Ez, is a helping hand."

"Ah believe Judge Travis arrives this morning. Would you like me to fetch him?"

The six groaned. "Nah," JD said, earning a heated glare from Ezra. "'Sides, he'd just put you and that silver tongue of yours in jail again."

Their friends' groans turned into laughter as Ezra gave an indelicate harrumph. "Good one, kid," Buck approved. JD's grin was almost as bright as the sun.
