He watches the desperation in his face, hears the fear in his voice, and knows that the man beside him, clawing desperately at the ice with his hook, will do anything to free his daughter. It's not the first time that he's striven to come to Emma's rescue. He knows that he was beside her through everything that went down when they journeyed back in time, and he remembers well what he told him when he thought he was a Prince.

It shouldn't matter that he's not a Prince; it doesn't, really. It shouldn't matter that he's a Pirate, but that fact still bothers David. Still, it's not the reason why he's aggravated by his presence in his daughter's life. No, it's that damned thing he keeps lifting to his lips whenever he pauses in trying to find a way to rescue Emma.

His hook isn't going to be the means, and neither is his rum. David knows what they have to do, but still, now that he's remembered Anna, or Joan as she called herself when he knew her, he knows the true reason why Hook's persistence in courting Emma bothers him. The man tends to say all the right words, but then he's a Pirate. He's got a silver tongue.

So do alcoholics. David remembers well all the promises his own father made him, and he recalls far too vividly holding his mother when she cried because of him. He recalls crying his own eyes out far too many a night for any boy to be so sad. His hands clench into fists. He has to ignore Hook. He has to focus on talking Elsa into fighting her battle.

Hook looks at him so pleadingly. He knows he's scared, but David is, too. He's scared of his daughter being hurt by the wrong guy yet again. Hook reaches for his flask as they wait to see if Elsa is going to be successful. David glowers at him. "That's not going to help."

"Maybe not you," Killian retorts, "but definitely me." He pauses with the bottle's mouth touching his lips and looks deeply into David's eyes. Then he lowers his drink. "You think this means anything to me in comparison to your daughter, mate?" he whispers heatedly. "I gave up my world, gave up my ship, for her. I'd do it again, too," he says, shaking his head. "No regrets long as she's in my life."

"Your silver tongue won't work on me, Hook."

"Don't need it to. Actions speak louder'n words, mate, every time. You think this means something to me? Something that could ever cause me to hurt your lovely daughter?" To David's astonishment, and delight, he throws his flask down the side of the icy mountain just as the ice breaks.

He retrieves it later, of course, but his message is clear and remains resonating in David's head: Nothing will stand between him and being with Emma, except for Emma's own determination. Not ship, not rum, nothing he can control will keep him from becoming the man with whom she wants to spend her happily ever after, and when David sees them again kiss, he doesn't think of his father or the alcohol. He only hopes Hook remains the man he has been so far of his word and that Emma will one day let them both make her happy.

The End
