I look up, nose in the air as my best friend makes a familiar turn in our route. There may be no rabbits to chase in this town, but the air here is always so full of interesting scents. I can smell so many things while poor Archie only continues plodding along as humans do. He thinks he's just taking me for a walk, but there's so much of the world he's missing. I wish there was some way I could share it with him and strain at my leash in my eagerness.
"Easy, boy! Easy!" He grabs at the hat he's wearing to keep the cold off of his furless ears, and although I don't want to, I do settle down a little bit. I've tried everything with him over the years we've been here. I've tried barking. I've tried dragging him with me. Nothing works. He can have his head right smack in the center of a thousand smells and still only pick up one or two scents.
I wish, for a moment, that I could still communicate with that blonde Savior about whom every one's always talking. Maybe then I could finally get a message across to Archie, but she did save him, with my help. That's the important thing from that time, and I have to be content to still have him in my life, even if I do wish fervently that I could share just a little bit of all the real excitement that's he's passing by. The man just doesn't know how to live life like I do!
We turn again, and I realize where he's taking us. I try to stay calm, but even my spots wriggle with my excitement. We're going to Granny's! She's the only store keeper that actually lets us inside her warm home, and she always has a bone waiting for me. I like Granny. I do, although I don't know why everybody insists on calling her Granny, but there's something even more special at her place.
There's Ruby. She actually understands me, because she's part wolf. I'm not really clear on all the details, but that makes her like me. We're some kind of kin even, I'm quite sure, but the really neat thing is that she understands me so well.
I'm so excited that I can't stay still. I'm almost dragging Archie again, and he's yelling at me. I stop once more, trying to force myself to calm down, but my tail won't be still. It keeps beating the air, but I know better than to chase it. Now's not the time. That will only try Archie's patience more. He's usually a very patient man -- he is a conscience, after all --, but his temper's been a bit quick lately or, at least, quick for him. He still never gets really angry at me, although I try his patience.
I yip before I even realize my mouth is open. My tongue's lolling out of my mouth. I put it back in and try to close to my mouth and behave yet again, but then I realize why I lost my cool. I can smell her, and she smells as wonderful as ever! She smells like the forest back home and the wild. I can smell the grass she rolled in last night and the rabbit she chased. I wish we could chase rabbits together.
But although Ruby is a wolf, she's still more human than she is anything else. I want her to be more in my life, and I know there's only way for that to happen. I've got to get her to become better friends with Archie. He needs more human companionship any way, and she would give us both the kind of friendships we need.
Her scent is also sweet. I don't know if it's because of her grandmother's baking or something else from the human world, but along with those wonderful scents of her wild adventures in the woods and her wolf self, there's always that sweet aroma. Archie's smelling it now. I can tell from the way his eyes are partially closing, his body's leaning forward, and his mouth is smiling. Ruby's scent is one of the few smells he never fails to pick up. I can't blame him; I could smell that girl for a hundred miles, easy.
She isn't a hundred miles away, though. She's already coming toward us as we enter Granny's. Everybody's smiling, and I know it's partially because of her. She never fails to make any one feel special. There's a whole bunch of scents in here today. I smell turkey, ham, bacon, eggs, and food, but there's more scents than those. I also smell leather, paper, tape, and . . . The Dwarfs are here from the mines, and that's a whole 'nother set of scents right there. I could sit here all day, smelling all these great scents and picking up their stories, but there's work to be done, if I ever want these two to get it together!
I bark when I see her and ignore the complaints from the others I startle. I charge forward, dragging a yelling Archie with me, and run rapid circles around her legs until, just as I predicted, she falls right into Archie's arms. He looks at her as though he's completely lost and confused. I bark, telling him what to do with the girl, but of course, he doesn't understand a single sound I make. Humans can be so trying sometimes!
But Ruby does understand me, as she always does, and the girl is wise enough to make the first move. She leans in, her fingers curling around the lapels of his plaid jacket, and opens her mouth above his. I wriggle, just thinking about all the delicious scents he should know be picking up off of her breath. He stammers; I bark again. He actually jumps! Humans!
Or perhaps, crickets! Surely a man would know what to do with a woman like Ruby? Humans have their own, strange mating rituals, but they do know how to mate, after all. I nudge the backs of Ruby's legs, and she goes just as I planned, the rest of the way into his arms.
She leans up against him and presses her lips to his. They break apart way too soon. If I was able, I'd pout. This isn't right at all! But Archie's breathing is staggered, so the girl did make an impact which, of course, I knew she would. You can't be wild and not make an impact.
"R-Ruby," Archie starts to sputter, and I yip once more, telling him that's not what he should be doing. He should be grabbing the girl and kissing the mess out of her! He needs to bring her on into our family, so that I always have some one to talk to, some one who really understands me and can finally tell him what I'm saying.
He snaps at my leash. "Hush, Pongo," he mutters, but his eyes are still glazed over.
I yip again, telling her to kiss him a second time and maybe smooch some sense into him, but for once, even she seems to be ignoring me. She is still leaning into him, and I know that maneuver as she slides her body against his. I think all species use that one.
She bats her eyelashes at him, and I swear if I didn't have my leash tangled around the two of them, I think Archie would actually faint! She points one long, sharp, and bright red fingernail up at the ceiling above their heads, then shrugs in a way that moves her small, white blouse and entices many more men to look at her. I glare at them. They need to leave her alone and let my Archie have her! I can't have her, so it's second best he get her!
"Mistletoe," she says, and I have no idea what that means except that humans act silly around that plant.
I let out a frustrated breath as she and Archie carefully untangle my leash. In a few minutes, I'm laying again at my best friend's feet, he's alone except for me, and she's nowhere to be seen. I puff out another breath, this one strong enough that it sends my bone from Granny skittering around my bowl. A bone isn't what I want today. I want Ruby to be with us!
This place is so full of her scent that it's hard to pinpoint her exact location, but suddenly, her soft hand drops onto my furry, spotted head. My tail starts wagging before I even fully realize that it's her. She adds a larger bone with ham still on it to my other, considerably smaller bone. My tail beats out an excited rhythm on the hard, wood floor.
"It's okay, boy," she whispers softly into my ear as she scratches me. "We're going to wear him down yet. Merry Christmas, Pongo."
I'm not sure what Christmas is, either, but just like with the mistletoe, humans usually act silly on that day. There was nothing silly about what just happened, however. Ruby is finally getting closer to my friend, and she just acknowledged my plan. My tail wags the fastest it's wagged since we found Archie when he was taken from me. We're going to wear him down yet. Ruby's going to be in our family yet!
I bark happily. She laughs. Archie looks down, and instead of seeing me first, he actually looks into her eyes instead. He smiles shyly; she grins broadly. I bark again, my whole body wagging. Oh, yeah, this plan is going to work fabulously!
The End
