He knows he shouldn't be like this. Cam's right: He knew exactly with whom he was getting involved with when they first got together. Well, maybe not exactly, but he did know he was a clown and a farmboy. He'd thought he could get him to grow out of those stages, but although Cam has proven sweeter, more wonderful, and generous than he'd ever imagined him being when they'd first met, his love for clowns and the farm have never decreased.

Mitch sighs and runs his fingers through his red hair. He's been being a jerk lately, and he knows it. He should never have laughed when their daughter hurt Cam, especially not every time she had. Looking back at those moments now, he doesn't really see the humor in them except for that first pie she threw in her other father's face when he was acting like such a ridiculously stupid clown. Still, he shouldn't have laughed. He shouldn't have encouraged her.

And he should have encouraged Cam instead. Being a clown is something the man he loves loves. No matter how much Mitch hates the fact, his clown side is a huge part of Cam. He owes it to him, and to them, to at least try to support him. It could be worse, he reasons with himself. Cam could be one of those clowns who never takes his makeup off, who never stops playing jokes, who never stops being a clown.

But he does get the real Cam quite often. He turns to look at the photographs in their room. In each one, Cam is smiling, and he isn't wearing a big, red nose or floppy, red shoes in any of them. Mitch looks back at his own reflection and sucks his breath in. "Oh, boy," he mutters. This is perhaps the worst idea he's ever had.

He can't go through with it, he decides a second later and reaches for the box of Kleenex. Just as he starts to dab at the paint, he hears Cam coming in the front door. "Mitchell? Mitchell, sweetie, I'm home!"

Mitch rubs harder and faster at the makeup. He scrubs furiously as Cam calls out, "Mitch? Lily? Where is every one?"

"Lily, hum," Mitch calls back, scrubbing so hard and fiercely now that his skin is turning red where the makeup's slowly lifting from his flesh. "Lily's at Claire's. They're going to keep her for the night." He doesn't mention that Claire owed him one, or that he owes Cam one. "I, hum, I thought we could use a night in. Just the two of us. Maybe order some pizza and movies."

His eyes dart to the doorknob, which is now rattling as Cam tries to open the door. "Mitch, what's going on?"

"Oh, did the door get stuck again, sweetie? Well, I'll be out in just a minute."

"Mitch?"

Mitch can hear that Cam is beginning to lose his patience from the tone of his voice. "Just a minute!" he calls again.

Cam shakes the doorknob more fiercely. Mitch scrubs as hard as he can with both hands while staring at the shaking knob through wide eyes. He realizes how ridiculous he must surely look now, like some stupid, silly clown on a cartoon where the bad guy is about to bust in upon him with a chainsaw whose blade will turn out to be made of rubber. He jumps out of his seat when the door does open.

"Cam!" he cries and whirls around, knocking a dozen bottles of Cam's clown makeup as he swiftly snatches up the towel and buries his face in it.

"Mitch, what's going on in here?" Cam asks, and although Mitch can't see him for the towel hiding his face for the moment, he can tell from his speech that Cam is striking a prima donna pose just inside of their bedroom. One hand is on his hip, and he's zeroing in on Mitch with his sexy eyes. "Have you been trying on new makeup without me?"

"No. No! Of course not!" Mitch scrubs his face with all the strength he has left.

Cam steps closer to him, then steps quickly back when something squeaks loudly underneath his sneaker. He bends down and picks up the rubber nose from the floor. "Mitch," he demands, "what are you doing with my nose?"

"I don't have your nose." Mitch laughs, but his voice is too high and strained. "I thought we stopped playing that game in grammar school!"

"Mitch." Cam's fingers press down hard around the small, red ball of rubber, making it squeak so loudly this time that Mitch jumps again. Cam drops the ball, grabs his lover by his elbow, and swings him around to stand in front of him. Mitch carefully keeps the towel plastered over his face. "Mitch," Cam demands, "lower the towel."

"But -- "

"Lower the towel."

"But -- "

"Lower it, or I'll lower it for you."

Slowly, Mitch inches the towel downward. He's managed to remove most of the makeup, but there are still streaks here and there painting his skin ridiculous shades. He looks sheepishly at Cam, who melts at the sight. "Mitch!" he cries. "You were trying to be a clown for me?" He grabs him and hugs him so tightly that his husband can't breathe at first. "That is the sweetest thing you've ever done!"

When at last he releases him, and Mitch can breathe again, the redhead sheepishly admits, "I couldn't go through with it."

"That's okay," Cam replies. "You're not the clown in the family. I understand. I don't want you to be anybody other than yourself. Lily doesn't like being a clown, either."

"You knew?"

Cam smiles at him. "Who knows our daughter better than me?"

"Better than I," mutters Mitch.

"What?"

"Nothing." He shakes his head. He shouldn't be correcting his husband's grammar or trying to change him. Cam certainly doesn't try to change him, after all, at least not often and never in big ways that may completely change the man he is.

"But you tried, sweetie," Cam continues gushing over him, his hands sweeping up and down his face. He rubs a spot of white. "You tried so hard." He beams down at him.

"I did," Mitch admits, beginning to feel himself becoming lost in the moment. He grins, deciding to, for once, just go with it. After all, that's really a little thing to do for the man he loves so much. "Didn't I?"

"You sure did!" Cam agrees, nodding. "I think that calls for a reward!"

He grabs Mitch again and bounces with him into their bed. The bed squeaks underneath them. Mitch makes a mental note to check on new mattresses but soon loses that note and all other thoughts as Cam begins covering him with tender kisses. "You really are so wonderful to me!" He reaches beyond the bed, and Mitch winces instinctively as he hears another, telltale squeak.

He faces Cam as his lover puts his nose on. He stares at that big, red, squeaking nose for just a moment. He knows one of Cam's fantasies is to be loved by him in his clown suit. At least, it's only the nose and not the whole awful. "I am wonderful to you, aren't I?" Mitch asks. It takes everything in him not to grab that nose and fling it as far away as he can when Cam comes at him again, but soon, once more, he's losing himself completely in his kisses, his embrace, and in him. He is wonderful to him this night, but then, too, Cam is always wonderful to him.

The End
