This used to bring him such joy. Sailing with no sign of trouble and nothing but miles and miles of the blue briny and a beautiful day ahead of him used to help him forget about everything else, about where he had come from and the problem of wherever he might be heading. He could even forget about his own brother when at the wheel of his ship and no worries to deter their journey.
The wind is good. His black sails are full of it. The sun glitters on the ocean. They've outran the vessels of the kingdom from which they just stole. Their cargo is laden with gold, plenty of food to last a month or more, and many, other treasures. Every Pirate's belly and pockets are full. There's no sign of trouble to be seen on the horizon.
But yet, he knows there is. It's not out here on the water. It's not following behind them or flying in from the air. He curses quietly underneath his breath for he knows that trouble lays within his own heart. "Take the wheel, Mister Smee," he calls.
Smee hurries to obey but looks questioningly at him. "Capt'n?" he asks, but Hook doesn't answer.
He stomps off to the head of his vessel instead. He leans over her railing and strokes her finely polished wood. "I thought you were what I wanted," he whispers, but he knows now he'd thought wrong. Indeed, he'd never really thought it; if he's honest with himself, there's been another on his mind this entire time.
"Swan," he murmurs. He runs his one, remaining hand over his face. He's tired, although he had plenty of sleep that morning. He knows what he must do. He just doesn't want to face it. He pats his ship. "I'm sorry, old girl," and calls to Smee again, telling him to set the course for the last time.
He knows who he must see. He knows what he must have, and he knows where he must go. He must return to her time. He must return to her. "Swan," he says, and a smile finally breaks out on his handsome face at the feel of her name on his tongue. Aye, he just had to be with her again, no matter the cost. That was all there was to it. "I'm comin' fer ye, luv." The day was finally bright.
