He's been staring at the same screen now for over thirty minutes. Finally, Mark stops and runs his tired hands over his weary face. Somehow, in the course of only a few hours, he's become more exhausted than he's ever been before, and for him, that's saying a great deal indeed. He was a spy for a short time with his wife, but before the SVR, he saved many lives. He saved hundreds of lives and nine whole kingdoms.
Of course, then he hadn't been alone. His deep, brown eyes wonder to the window in his office and to the blue sky beyond the pane. He wasn't alone then, but he also wasn't with people he knew. He'd only thought he'd known them. Virginia had proved that painfully true whenever she had left him shortly after they'd returned to her kingdom here in New York.
He runs his hands over his face again, and the golden gleam of his wedding band catches his attention. He turns it around in his fingers, thinking about all it meant. He wore the band with pride, but clearly, it meant increasingly little to the women of this era and kingdom. If it did, Katya would not have so quickly come up with the lie she'd used to explain away her absences in their son's life.
He thought he'd known what pain was. After all, he'd almost died several times before. He'd come frightfully close to being burned at the stake and had had a sword embedded in his chest once or twice before. He'd thought his heart would stop when he'd caught Virginia with another man and learned subsequently that she had aborted their son without even telling him beforepaw. He scratches at his forehead now, murmuring words beneath his breath that he hasn't spoken in years, "Huff Puff!"
He'd thought he would die. He had lost his wife and son. He'd believed wolves mated only once their entire lifetime, and his heart had truly been shattered. To make matters worse, their one portal back to his home had been destroyed. He'd searched a long time to find a way back to the Nine Kingdoms, and had on more than one occasion given up all hope and started to take his own life, but then he'd met Katya.
He had been about to step out into traffic the first time he'd met her. He knew the horrible automobiles the humans of this world used were monstrous machines, eager and ready to take a life. He'd known just as well that he could step out into traffic without enough time for the driver of the next vehicle to stop, and yet no one would know that he had chosen to end his own life. Virginia would never know how greatly he was still hurting because of her deceit and lack of love for him.
He scratches his forehead again. He feels almost as though he has fleas again, but modern medicine helped rid him of those pests years ago. And then he thinks back again to when he first met his Katya. She had appeared in his life that day like a golden Angel. For a scarce moment, he'd actually believed that a celestial being from his world had managed to slip through a portal he couldn't find and come to him, but soon enough, he'd found out she was only human.
Wolf heaves a heavy sigh. Perhaps that's the reason why he is so ill fated to love: He keeps falling for humans. Wolves are only supposed to mate once in a lifetime, but he never found a woman of his own species he could love, especially not here where wolves and Fairies are not even supposed to exist. Besides, he truly loves his Katya. Nothing in any of the kingdoms through he's travelled means as much to him as the life and family they've built together, and now the SVR is back in their lives, threatening to pull apart everything he cherishes.
Barely contained tears glimmer in his eyes. "Huff puff." He scratches again. He knows why Katya lied, but it troubles him that the thought of an affair came so quickly to her. He would never think to cheat on her, and yet it seemed to be the first excuse she could imagine. Perhaps she hasn't cheated on him. He didn't smell an outright lie on her before, but then she's good at what she does. He remembers well that she was once such a talented spy that he hadn't always spied the lies she spouted.
Could that be happening again? Has she had an affair on him? Has she betrayed his love, and he's just not found the proof of it yet? Could she be as deceitful as the last one to whom he had dedicated his life, heart, and soul? He scratches yet again. He doesn't want to think she is, but yet, somehow, he can't quite manage to believe her when she tells him she's been faithful to him throughout their entire marriage.
Something is wrong, he knows, and it's much more than just the return of the SVR. It's more than his entire family's lives being put at stake. Something is wrong between them, between his heart and hers, and he fears soon he will find the truth. It's strange, he thinks, that he should fear that more than Katya actually mating with some one else, but he does.
Virginia had told him once that humans liked to pretend. He's never been a human, but perhaps he's lived with them long enough now that that desire has rubbed off on him. He'd like to pretend everything is all right. He'd like to never discover the truth for he knows that truth will be heartbreaking when he can no longer hide from it and has to face it. He'd like to pretend Katya could love him as greatly as he does her. With another scratch and a soft, "Huff Puff!", Wolf admits to himself that that is the scariest thing of all: She never will love him as much as he does her.
No one will ever love him as much as he loves them. Alex doesn't trust him, and well he shouldn't. His eldest daughter lies to him every day, and his youngest is at that stage in life where the cub begins to drift away from the parent. Worst of all, his Katya doesn't cherish him the same as he does her. Virginia never loved him, and he's becoming ever more afraid that his Katya does not yet recognize what love is. He's shown her nothing but love, but her love him is not half as great in return.
His tears begin to spill as he scratches his forelock again. He only wants to be loved. He only wants his soul mate and his family to love him. He's given so much for both. He's made an entirely new life to please his Katya and to protect her and her family, but now it's all becoming unravelled. "Huff Puff!" He'd jump through the nearest mirror if he'd thought it would take him back to the Nine Kingdoms, but that wouldn't solve anything. His family would be left here, and if he did manage to take them with him, knowing his luck, the SVR would follow.
There are answers, he knows, but none he wants. Still, soon, he will be faced with the truth, and his world will come crumbling down again. He'd barely survived Virginia, andit was only because of the love he'd thought he'd shared mutually with Katya that he had managed to survive. Now soon, his Katya would be taken from him, or worse, he fears, he will learn that she never loved him as he's loved her all this time.
He wishes this was a Fairy kingdom. He wishes there was magic to help them, or at least allies like Tony and Wendell. The SVR would not stand a chance against them if they had magic or an entire kingdom at their disposal. But as Virginia never once tired of telling him, this is not a fairy tale kingdom. This is the modern world, and here, he fears, there are no happy endings. "Huff Puff!"
