"What was it like, Professor Wagner?" Rico suddenly and quietly asks, looking up at his dearest friend and favorite teacher through big, shining eyes.

"Vhat vas vhat like, Rico?" Kurt asks, but his furry, blue tail swishes as he looks around at all of the young and impressionable children eagerly watching him. He should have known the question was coming, after today's sermon. He holds sermons regularly now for those who want to hear them and, for whatever reason, can not go to a regular service. The truest church is in one's heart, after all, and where even just two are gathered in His name, He will always be there.

Kurt smiles to himself while readying himself and trying to pull together just the right answers. He was there today. He felt Him, and he likes to think that all these children who were there with him for his sermon and are now sharing his Sunday lunch also felt His loving, guiding presence. None can guide better than the hand of the Father, but he will do his best, for Him, for these and other children, for his friends and family, and for the world.

"What was the kingdom of Heaven like? Were the streets really paved with gold?" Rico asks, one pincher silently opening and closing.

"Of course not," Ziggy says, laughing. "God has no need for gold!"

"Nein," Kurt agrees, "He doesn't, but some of ze streets are gold."

"Really?" Rico asks, and he and several of the others lean forward in interest. Even Ziggy can not hide her curiosity. She is one, Kurt knows, who is loathe to believe in something she can not see and feel for herself, being in possession of a very scientific brain, even at her age, but he has faith she'll come to the right conclusions before it's too late. Besides, she already believes. She, like all others, just has questions.

"Ja."

"What did they look like?"

"What did they feel like?"

"Were they hard to walk on?"

"Did you walk on clouds?"

"Did the gold hurt your feet?"

"Did you see God?"

"Did you see Jesus?"

Kurt leans back, laughing and smiling. His tail swishes joyfully in the air behind him. "Easy, youngsters," he coaxes. "One question at a time."

"Does He hate us?"

Kurt jumps on that soft query. He looks into the young, green mutant's face and says earnestly, "Nein. God loves all of His children, Anole. It doesn't matter to him if ve're mutant or him, straight or gay or bi or vhatever. He doesn't care if ve have two heads or three tails or polka dots and fur. He doesn't care vhat ve look like, and He made every single one of us in His image. Ve are all beautiful to him."

"Then why did you leave?" another child asks.

"Because," Kurt admits both to them and himself, "even in Heaven, I vasn't happy. Above all, our Lord vants us to be happy, to love one another, and to love Him. But I loved my family and friends so much zat I missed zem too much. My heart was filled vith sorrow vithout zem, especially vhen I could tell, from vatching zem from above, zat zey needed mein help, but I couldn't be here for zem. Zat's vhy I came back, and zat," he finally realizes, "is vhy He let me come back."

His yellow eyes shimmer with the truth of his words. God does love all of His children, and He wants them all to be happy. That's why he's come back. That's why he's come home, and no matter what else happens, no matter who or how else he may fail, as long as he keeps following his heart, he won't fail God. One day, when the time is right and his friends no longer need him, when the world no longer needs him, the Lord will welcome him back with open arms.

That will surely be a day to celebrate, but then, he realizes, looking around at the children, so is today. "It's good to be back," he admits. "Heaven is a vonderful place," he raises his soda, "but being vith one's family is ze best zere is." Smiling, tail twitching, he toasts them all.

The End
