It isn't that he doesn't notice the aliens. He sees them every day. There are so many times he wants to pass out from the shock of the things he sees, and so many more times that he actually does. He slips away to the doctor quite often, making certain he hasn't suffered a brain concussion or anything else that would make him see things, but he isn't seeing things that aren't there. He almost wishes he was. Life would be so much easier if he was crazy.
But he's not. The aliens keep visiting them, and Lilo is often in the very midst of it all. He doesn't know how Nani handles all that she does. It's one thing to have to raise your little sister. That's hard enough, but to have to raise your little sister, a blue-furred alien, and a one-eyed . . . thing while keeping another from destroying the world? The woman is amazing!
It isn't just aliens which astound him. It's Nani, too. It's Nani by far. He doesn't know how she does everything she does without going insane. He doesn't know how she goes to such lengths for her kid sister nor does he understand how she manages to do it all while being so breathtakingly beautiful, but she does. She's always there for Lilo. She's always there for the world, and when he's lucky, she's there for him, too.
It's not that he doesn't notice aliens. He does every day, night and day really, but he sees her through it all. If she can be brave enough to look death in the face every day, to deal with a multitude of aliens and countless times of saving the world, he can be brave enough to ignore everything that would send other suitors away. Besides, that's part of what makes him so lucky. She is an amazing woman, and no one else on the island dares date her for long.
That's part of what makes her his. No one else is brave enough to hold her hand when aliens attack. No one else is brave enough to look the other way without actually running the other way. No one else is brave enough to be her man, but David is and he knows it's a blessing. No matter how many aliens her family adopts, no matter how many times the world almost ends, it is a blessing to get to travel through life with such an amazing, heroic, and beautiful woman, and one of these days, when the world isn't being destroyed by aliens and Nani has one of those ultra rare quiet moments, he's going to ask her to make that blessing permanent. He's going to ask her to marry him; David just hopes she has time this time, between saving the world and sitting aliens, to say "yes".
