She watches him from the shadows. Nothing has ever been this hard, and she thought she had suffered greatly. She has suffered greatly, she knows, but still she's never had to do anything so hard as this. She could easily stay here in the shadows all night, watching him, and perhaps she would if one of her companions did not start forward. "No," she whispers urgently, reaching out and placing a still hand on his arm. He looks at her, and neither Pirate nor Queen denies the tears glittering in their dark eyes.

He nods and walks away. She knows he needs to be alone with his grief. She looks back to her son, her child with whom she has shared so much and of whom she's never been prouder. Robin catches her hand. Their eyes meet briefly, and then he kisses the back of her hand. "I'll be waiting," he whispers before he, too, walks away to give them both time.

Slowly, Regina approaches her child, remembering all the times he's been hurt and injured, all the times she's cared for him and he's been furious with her. All the times she's hurt him can not add to even begin to compare to how he is soon going to feel. He's going to shout. He's going to scream. He's going to cry. She gulps. He might even hate her. After all, this is her fault.

The sound of her high heels clacking against the linoleum seem to echo in the small kitchen as she enters from the open back door. The wolf watching her boy glances up at her, and Regina stills herself for Granny's bristling attitude. The old woman looks at her long and hard, then sets two cups of hot cocoa down in front of Henry.

She smiles at her knowingly, and Regina realizes she must be glowering at her in response when the old lady tells her softly, "It's not your fault." The former Evil Queen looks at her in surprise. "It's hard raising young ones," she admits, "especially in today's world." Then she leaves her own kitchen willingly so that Regina can talk to Henry, who's already looking imploringly up at her.

"What's she talking about?" her son asks. "Mom, what's going on?" he demands, taking in the sight of her tears. Regina tries again to wipe them away. "Where's Mom?" He's almost shouting now as his adopted mother sinks into the seat next to his.

"Henry," Regina starts softly, trying hard to find the right words. In the next second, as the horror of the news to come begins to fill her son's eyes, she realizes that there are no words for this. There's only the truth. "Emma . . . She took Rumplestiltskin's darkness." She closes her own eyes rather than to see the pain in her boy's eyes. She has to force the next words out pass the tight lump in her throat. "She took it so it wouldn't take me. I didn't ask her to," she adds quickly.

A long moment stretches between them. Finally, Regina opens her eyes and faces Henry again. He's crying but not sobbing. Slowly, he nods. She braces herself for the worst, but then he's moving, his arms going around her waist. He cries into her shoulder for a long time while she sits awkwardly, hesitantly brushing his soft, brown hair.

She doesn't know how much time passes before he raises his head again. It could be minutes or hours; it really doesn't matter. She's still not ready to face him when his eyes lift back to hers. His tone sounds like a voice much older than his years and with the determination of a true man as he tells her, "It's not your fault."

"But -- "

"No."

Her hand stills on his head. "Henry, -- "

"No," he says again, this time with even more determination. "It's not your fault, Mom. Mom did what she had to do to protect us, to protect you." He hugs her tighter. "I couldn't lose you again, not after what happened today. She wouldn't let me lose you. She sacrificed herself to save us both, and we will find a way to bring her back."

"Henry -- "

"Love always finds a way," he says strongly, stubbornly, and Regina's lips quiver up into a half smile. Her son speaks with such determination and faith. He talks like a grown man much older than his actual, few years. Perhaps he is right. Maybe they can find a way together. He's proven himself right many times before.

"We will find a way."

Regina's eyes flick up to where Mary Margaret is edging into the kitchen with David trailing behind her. "We'll find a way. Love always finds a way."

Regina smiles despite her sorrow. She hugs Henry more tightly. Maybe he is right again. Maybe they can still save Emma. Regardless, he's made her a prouder mother than she's ever been before this day.

"We'll bring her back. We'll make her good again."

"Together," Snow adds to her husband's declaration.

Henry nods. "Together."

Regina nods as well, still holding tightly to her child. She never wanted to share him, but she's found she rather likes having another mother to watch over her son. It's nice to have a family again, a real family, she thinks, holding to her child and gazing into the determined face of her stepdaughter. It is nice to have a family again, and she'll do anything she can to keep them together, Emma included. "Let's get started," she whispers, and together, they do.

The End
