"I can't believe I'm missin de shootout because I cot pneumonia," Sydney complains, her words muffled because of her sickness.

Gage grins at her from across the room. Only his partner would complain about missing the biggest, and deadliest, shootout the state of Texas had seen in years! He, CD, and Alex have all been worrying over Walker, Trivette, Trent, and Carlos making it out of the fight alive, and yet Syd is fussing because she didn't get to be on duty during the shootout! "We were kept as hostages in a deep freezer full of coke," he teasingly points out. His grin only widens when her beautiful, brown eyes blaze at him. Even sick, she's still a firecracker, and what a beautiful one at that! His face is alight with his grin, but his heart aches with his desire for her.

But then she sinks back into the couch, groaning, and he remembers how bad she feels. It's true he's sicker, but he won't let on to the fact, especially after how she teased him the last time he was sick. She had had more clothes than he to fight against the cold in the hours they had been in the freezer, because he had insisted on giving her his jacket. He still didn't regret the choice and would still argue just as adamantly that she take his jacket if they had to do it all over again, although he certainly helped never to be kept inside a freezer for such a long period again.

Stepping into another freezer, whenever he did eventually, would still be too soon, and he doubted he'd ever want to eat ice cream again. Still, there had been the way she had gazed into his eyes when she could no longer speak, and he had gotten to hold her after wrapping his jacket around her freezing body. The warmth he felt radiating between them had almost been enough to dull the cold. Almost.

There is a spark between them, but not just a spark. He's been falling for her ever since they met, and although he constantly makes the mistake of thinking he couldn't possibly love the woman any more than he already does, he finds himself loving her more each and every time they're together. Just like now when he's gazing into her reddened eyes, and she's trying so hard to fight from admitting how sick she is, his arms and heart both aching to hold her, he's taken aback by how wonderful, how beautiful, and how, in her own irate way, secretly sweet she is all over again. He doesn't regret the time spent in the freezer; he doesn't regret any time spent with her.

Her groans bring him springing forward from the couch, and for once in her presence, he grimaces when she sneezes. He manages to avoid most of it and makes no comment about what does splatter onto his sleeve. Instead, he's reaching for the box of Kleenex as Alex comes in smiling.

"Walker just arrested the last of them," she tells them jubilantly. "Every one's fine."

"Fine," Syd mutters to which Gage almost laughs, "but I didn't get to shoot anybody!"

Alex's attention snaps to her. "Sydney!" she exclaims in surprise.

Gage's grin broadens even more. "She's kidding." Or, at least, he thinks she is. He knows, despite their past, that Sydney doesn't simply enjoy being a Ranger because they get to enforce the law and, along the way, shoot some bad guys. She truly believes in what they're doing. Their badges and their partnership have changed their lives forever. He almost hated being a Ranger at first, but now he scarcely imagine not fulfilling the role. Not having her as a partner, regardless, is a horror he never wants to face.

"Sure 'm kiddin'," Sydney mutters, taking another Kleenex from the box. Their eyes meet. Their fingers brush, and there's the unspoken electricity running between them as always. Then she grins, and he braces himself for trouble. "I ever tell you how cute you are when you scared?" she slurs.

"Huh," he stammers doubtfully. "No?"

Her grin is contagious, pulling his out even now, when he's completely uncertain what to make of her or how to plan for her next move. Sydney is never this forward with him. She's too scared that allowing herself to love him as they both know she already does, just as he loves her, will destroy their friendship. It's a price neither wants to pay, but she's not even willing to try because she's so afraid of what will happen.

But then, Sydney isn't thinking clearly right now. He knows she's doped up on meds. He can feel his own mind swirling, and if it hadn't been for caring for her, he would've been out long ago.

"Well," Sydney speaks decisively, "you are. You're very cute. Come 'ere." This time, she grabs not just the box of Kleenex but the hand that's holding it, as well. He doesn't struggle as she pulls him in beside her but instead takes advantage of the moment, sliding underneath her blankets, curling up next to her side where he knows he belongs, and draping an arm over her. She cuddles deeper into his embrace and is out like a light.

Gage looks down at her and chuckles quietly. He knows she'll be pissed when she wakes, if the veil of the pneumonia has lifted, but cuddling with her like this is worth anything she can possibly do to him, even getting thrown on his back again.

"Who's for some hot cocoa and . . . ?" CD never finishes his statement as he spies Gage with his arms wrapped soundly around Sydney. He breaks into a bright smile instead, and he and Alex quietly slip from the room.

Gage looks back down to Syd. He feels the familiar ache in his throat and heart whenever he gazes freely upon her beauty. She is so beautiful! He has never known another woman as beautiful or as deadly as his little firecracker, and he knows he never will. Lightly, ever so lightly so as to not wake her, he brushes his lips against her dark, soft hair and smiles. She may never say the words, but he knows she loves him just as he knows he'll go to his grave always loving her. He kisses her again, wanting to hold on to this moment and memorize everything about it and her so he'll have the memory to cherish forever in case Syd never lets him hold her again, but then as his lips touch her hair a third time, he, too, falls under the sway of the medicine churning in their veins.

Hearing his snore from the hallway, CD laughs. Alex, her eyes dancing merrily, places a finger against her nose to hush him. Then she slips her hand back into the room and turns out the lights. They shut the door on their friends and inch away to share cocoa, laughter, and gossip.
