The waitress had been droning on for what already felt like hours and he was considering going ahead and lighting up for a third smoke already during that break when flashing, rainbow colors on the television caught his attention. Becker looked up, and an actual smile caught at his mouth.

"What the -- ?" Bob, sitting beside him, asked, finally breaking his attention away from the low neckline of Reggie's blouse.

"What?" Reggie asked distractedly. "What was I saying? Oh, yeah."

But before she could continue, Bob spoke again, "No, Reg. Look at Becker! He's smiling!"

Jake looked up from his newsstand, and as all three watched Becker as though he might be about to toss grenades on them, the doctor simply reached for the remote and turned up the volume. His face cracked in the first wide grin he'd experienced in years as he listened to the newscaster telling the world about the long line of couples being married ever since the Supreme Court had legalized gay unions.

Reggie's eyes darted between Becker and the TV. "I don't get it. It's just gays," she said. "They've been all over the news for the last couple of days."

"Looks like somebody hasn't been watching the news," Bob remarked as Jake moved closer.

He took the seat beside Becker and silently placed a pack of premium cigarettes by his coffee. He started to simply leave them there when Becker's hand touched his. As the two men smiled at each other, Reggie fumed, "You mean I've been trying all these years, and . . . "

"Yep. Bob told you, Reg, you want a real man, you need Bob." Despite his words, Bob was smiling as he watched his friends. "Becker's not available."

"I can see that." Reggie slapped down the rag she'd been using to clean the counter and stormed back into her kitchen.

Bob shrugged, glanced again at his friends, and started to turn back to the TV when he noticed a nother man farther down the bar watching Jake and Becker. Becker took his hand from Jake's and picked up the smokes he'd given him, but the man kept watching. "Hey, you got a problem?" Bob called to him. "Bob thinks you have a problem!"

"They're -- "

"What they are is their own damn business. Look at something else."

Bob's angry tone had drawn Reggie back to her door. Now she stepped out and swung a rag over her shoulder. "In fact," she said, "go somewhere else."

The man left grumbling. Becker wouldn't meet their eyes as he lit up, but Jake shyly spoke, "Thank you."

"You can pay Bob back some other time."

"Bob!"

"Oh, okay."

Reggie smiled. "You're friends," she told Jake and Becker both, although Becker still wouldn't look up, "and friends are always welcome."

"Thanks for the smokes," John murmured and left to head back to work, but for the rest of the day, there was an uncommon lightness to his step and a smile on his face that worried his staff and clientele alike.
