He didn't expect to see him there. He didn't expect to see him at all that day. He was only half paying attention when he glanced at the television around which several of his students were gathered, but what he saw made Charles stop and held him captive. His jaw worked, but his mouth seemed incapable of producing any actual sound.

Professor? Jean was the first to notice as the youngsters all kept buzzing with the excitement of the hour. Their conversations along with her mental voice drifted about him.

"Do you think they'll approve mutants next?"

"We don't need their approval!"

"I think it's sweet!"

"Look at those two! They've been together thirty years!"

"That's longer than just about every relationship I've ever heard of!"

"We know it's longer than any relationship you've ever been in, Bobby."

"No, really. I think it's cool."

Charles blinks slowly, still staring at the television set. Thirty years is an awesome thing to celebrate, but then he and Erik have known each other and loved one another, even if from afar, for much longer. His blue eyes strike a piercing gaze at the television as he tries to catch sight of the car again. Was it just his imagination? Surely Erik would not participate in a parade launched by homo sapiens, even if it is to celebrate another of their people?

He wants to scream at the camera man to focus back on the only person who's ever come close to being a true life partner for him. Were he there with him, he would be tempted to use his telepathy to control him and angle the camera exactly where he wants it, but then, if he was there, he would know for certain if Erik was present. He would not need any camera.

A rush of wind suddenly passes through the room, but Charles dismisses it at first, knowing that Ororo will be almost as pleased as he with the news that the government has finally done something right and legalized gay marriage. The popping sound of Wolverine's claws demand his attention. He rips his gaze from the television set just as Scott is asking him, "Do you want us to remove him, sir?"

"Pietro," Charles acknowledges the man with ever growing surprise.

Pietro is grinning widely, but then, he's always been a cocky boy. He jerks a thumb at the screen. "Father is requesting your presence."

"He can request all he wants," Scott begins to declare, but it is Logan, for a change, who puts a staying hand on his shoulder.

"Easy, bub," he growls out of the corner of his mouth. When Scott looks at him questioningly, Wolverine just lets his glower do the talking. He knows Charles and Erik aren't completely out of the closet, not yet any way, but however much or little Charles wants Scott or any one else to know about what is happening is all they'll ever learn from him.

"Professor?" Jean asks aloud this time as Scott actually stands down.

"You want us t' go wit' you, Prof?"

"My winds could carry us swiftly and easily, Professor."

"Yeah, and make a scene on your arrival there and be slower than me getting him there." Pietro extends a hand. "It's up to you, Professor."

There are a million questions Charles knows he should be asking. When did Pietro begin conversing with his father again? Is it truly the celebratory parade where Erik awaits him, or is it somewhere else for another purpose? Is any of this safe? Does he care? Is he dreaming? But in the end, he doesn't speak. He just takes the hand of his lover's son and allows him to whisk him away from his own family.

The air has barely began to settle when Rogue gasps.

"What's wrong, chere?"

She shakes her head in stunned disbelief. "N-Notin', Remy," she murmurs at first but doesn't pull away when his hand takes her gloved one. "It's -- That's Mothah. Ah mean, Mystique. That's th' form she used most often back when . . . when she an' Irene were r-raisin' me."

Remy starts to smirk at the notion of Mystique actually raising Rogue (he knows the woman used her more than anything else), but his smirk dies on his mouth at the look on his love's face. He squeezes her hand through her yellow glove and steps closer to her side. "You wanna be dere, chere?"

Rogue nods, unable, much as Charles was before her, to take her eyes from the set. Remy lifts his red orbs to his best friend. "Stormy?"

She smiles. "No sooner asked, my friend, than done. Who else would like to come?"

There is a general chorus of agreement. She smiles as a note of excitement actually creeps into Logan's voice. Her own blue eyes glitter as she sees the unshed tears in Anole's eyes. Even Scott is quickly agreeing with his wife's gentle persuasion. She whips up enough breezes for a small tornado to form, but yet her winds are gentle on each of her friends and, as she considers them, family members. They carry them swiftly and deposit them just outside of the cameras watching the parade.

Women and men are kissing each other as they march down the usually busy highway. Some swing batons, some lassos, and others sparklers and other things set on fire. Some do not walk at all, and Ororo's heart swells with pride as she sees her Professor gliding down the road in a red sports car with his oldest friend and, she knows as well as Logan did, secret lover. She wants to cheer for him as he leans over and kisses Erik before the world.

Remy, meanwhile, has spotted Raven. He races out to join her in the group of women with whom she is marching, tugging Rogue along as he goes by her gloved hand. When they reach them, his red eyes speak volumes. If she harms his Rogue, he'll stop at nothing to make her pay, and by the time he's done with her, she'll wish herself dead a thousand times over, but as long as she is nice to his chere, he'll support her and whatever cause the women choose.

"Come on, Hank!" Bobby races into the crowd without hesitation, but Henry lingers, despite Ororo's winds pushing gently at his back. Bobby turns and waves at him to join him. "Come on!"

"It's . . . It's okay, Doctor McCoy," Anole speaks quietly. "They may not welcome us as we all are, but they welcome this about us."

Kurt smiles, his long, blue tail swishing, and pops rainbow bracelets with image inducers attached to them on to both Hank's and Anole's wrists. "I knew zis vould come in handy. Now, mein freunds, zey vill velcome us as zey see us." His mask to protect his true image from the world is already in place, and he's given an image inducer to Rico and Rockslide, as well. They rush out into the parade with several other students running alongside them. Piotr, Scott, and Jean join, and finally Hank, with Ororo and Logan at his side, walks into the parade.

Bobby jogs back to them and, before Hank can stop him, throws his arms around him and kisses him long and deep.

Logan grins as the sun seems to shine somehow more brilliantly than ever before. He glances at Ororo, not entirely sure if it is her doing or simply the mood of the whole affair. Hank is blushing, but Logan shakes his grey head. "Ain't nutin' wrong wit' love." He grins as motorcycles rev to life behind them. They're not being rushed. The bikers, like the rest of them, are simply celebrating, and he'll be damned if Vic ain't on one of the Harleys.

Ororo is walking beside him and beaming as she casts glances at the tail lights of Erik's car where she knows he and Charles are cuddling; at Raven united with her daughter and holding part of a gigantic, rainbow flag as she walks beside Rogue and Remy; at Anole, seemingly in his element at last; at every smiling, loving face; and finally at one of her dearest friends who still refuses to come out of the closet despite the hungry and joyous looks he's sharing with a certain, blonde biker. Her laughter twinkles in the breezes around them. "No indeed, my friend. Love is the greatest force in this world."

"Yeah," Rico agrees, tail slashing through the air with his eager happiness, "and maybe they will accept us one day, Professor Munroe. Do you think that's possible?"

She smiles at the boy even as Kurt answers for her, "Ja." He reaches a hand for Ororo, and she takes it proudly, even if the world can not see the beauty she knows he is.

"With love," she agrees, "anything is possible." The shouts, the horns, the engines, the trumpets, and even the fireworks all seem to shout their agreement as the parade continues celebrating the greatest day the X-Men have known yet and they walk, side by side with humanity, for one of the causes dearest to their hearts.

The End
