Silence rings as it so oft seems to do after a huge battle. To Kitty, the silence is even louder than the cries of war which still fill her head. She walks through the settling smoke of powers and gunfire, passing by friends and enemies alike without looking at any of them. Some one is crying over some one fallen; some one else is trying frantically to revive another.

She passes by them all without looking. Without seeing, she even walks through people. She pays no one any attention, not even Piotr and Illyana. She doesn't want to see any one. She doesn't want to talk to any one. She doesn't want to hear it's going to be okay.

"Pumpkin?" Wolverine asks as Kitty walks right through him, smoking cigar and all. But not even for him does she stop or pause. She doesn't even blink. She thought she'd never want to be in a perpetual, phased state again after being trapped in it for so long before, but now she truly wishes she was trapped. To not be, to have to live this life, is even more of a cage than being unable to touch any one ever again.

She doesn't want to be close to anybody. She doesn't want to talk to anybody, to see anybody, to care for anybody ever again. Tears fall unchecked down her face as she walks on, neither knowing or caring where her feet may take her. She doesn't want to go anywhere. She doesn't want to be anywhere.

She wants to die. No, she wants to already be dead. It should be her laying on the stone, gray, cold floor back there where he saved her life, but it isn't. She's lost another friend, another family member, and this time, it's just too much. She doesn't want to have to bury him. She shouldn't have to bury him. If it wasn't for her, he'd still be alive. If it wasn't for her, he never would have been in danger in the first place.

And then she realizes where her mindless walking has taken her. She gazes down at his small, purple body, singed by a fire that was not his own, and wants to scream, but the sound will not come. She wants to sob, but she can not even manage to do that. She just stares at him, more tears falling swiftly, and wishes she was the one laying there instead of him. She should never have tried to be his friend. It's because of her he's hurt, because of her he's dead. She wants to scream, but the sound just won't come.

"Pumpkin?" Wolverine asks again, and then he looks beyond her and sees their fallen comrade. "Shit." He bites his cigar in two, throws it to the side, and stomps it out even as he bellows, "HANK!"

The genius doctor is several yards away from them, caring for another of their wounded, when Wolverine yells. His furry, blue head jerks up, but he's not alone. Several others have noticed how Kitty's been acting. Her friends are coming, but they're as lost as Logan is as to how to help their fallen.

"Kitten," Ororo breathes shakily. Thunder rumbles; lightning slashes. She drops down beside her best friend and tries to touch her shoulder. Her delicate fingers pass right through her body. Kitty doesn't even seem to notice that she and Logan, Piotr and Illyana, Kurt and Rachel . . . any one is nearby, any one but the dead.

Cecilia relieves Hank at his patient, and the Beast lopes rapidly on all fours to reach the small group gathering around the fallen body. They part to make room for him, all but Kitty. She still stands as if in shock, staring down at her best friend. Her tears are flowing. Every one there aches to hold her, hug her, help her any way they can, but she's still phased. She's not letting any one near.

Henry carefully examines the little body before him. He checks for a heartbeat and finds a faint trace. He places one hand on his chest and begins pumping gently while attempting to breathe into his mouth. But the dragon isn't responding.

Ororo moves closer, knowing there has to be something she can do. They can not lose another of their number, especially one so small, so weak in comparison to the rest of their powers but also so courageous. Henry looks up at her, tears glistening in his blue eyes. He tries again and again, but there is no response. He squares his furry shoulders and starts to turn toward Kitty.

"One more time," Ororo commands quietly. The doctor opens his mouth to protest, but she repeats, "One more time." She kneels beside him, her hands taking position on the dragon's chest, and as Hank breathes into his mouth, she pumps, sending a trace of lightning into him through her chocolate palms.

Lockheed coughs. Kitty squeals. Ororo and Hank both shed tears but move away together to give the girl and dragon room. "Don't ever do that to me again, dragon!" she warns him while squeezing him hard, her arms wrapped tightly around his entire body.

"Coo coo!" Lockheed cries out in dismay, pushing against her. She lets him out of her embrace just a little, just enough so he can breathe. There's laughter around them now, but it's happy laughter, relieved laughter. None of them wanted to bury another friend. None of them wanted to see her hurt again.

Hank clasps Ororo's shoulder. Kurt, his long, pointed tail swishing, hugs both Henry and Ororo. Logan grins, lights another cigar, and takes a puff. He, too, is glad they didn't lose another friend. The dragon may not offer much in the way of helping their team at large, but he means the world to the kid. For Wolverine, that's enough to make him want to live forever -- or, at least, as long as Kitty Pryde does.

The girl and dragon are inseparable, and not even Death should separate them. From now on, he'll have to keep a closer look over the flying dragon, even if just for the kid. He smiles and watches her hug him again. Yeah, he thinks, for the kid. He'll do it for the kid.
