"G-Gabby . . . " He could slap him for starting so slowly and stammering. The only thing that restrains his hands from following their impulse is the knowledge that slapping the little dork will do him absolutely no good. Joxer's shy and stumbling everywhere, his vocal chords as unskillful as his ambisinister hands, which, the thief notes, are now shaking slightly, and the rest of him.

He rolls his eyes and bites his cheek to resist the urge to push the boy forward. If he was a fish, he would have already flopped to his death in the water. "Y-You have so-something in . . . in your ear."

"What is it, Joxer?" Gabrielle queries softly, cocking her head slightly to one side. It's the perfect angle for a kiss, but the little dork still doesn't take the invitation.

Instead he finishes reaching behind her ear, where Autolycus is doing his best to patiently hold the item around which the boy's quivering fingers finally close. "A--A rose . . . " Joxer tries to remember his line, but stammers still, "A-A rose by any other name . . . "

"Joxer?"

"Lovely," Autolycus mouths. "It smells lovely. Her hair smells lovely." Silently, he acts as though he's sniffing Gabrielle's blonde hair from behind the bard, who still, thankfully, seems completely oblivious to his presence.

"Beautiful," Joxer concludes, and Autolycus slaps his own forehead. His mustache twitches, and he falls back, defeated.

But Gabrielle is still smiling. "It is beautiful, isn't it?" she asks, then frowns when the wouldbe warrior and lover shakes his head, a motion that causes his makeshift pieces of metal armor to clang against each other.

"You're beautiful," he tells her, and Gabrielle beams. Joxer grins back, and even the King of Thieves smiles as the lad looks at his cherished love with doe eyes. The boy isn't a complete thunderhead, after all.

He glances away and catches sight of Xena moving back toward them. She's carrying a string of fish for their dinner, but it's not the fish that makes Autolycus' smile broaden, his mustache quiver, and his palms sweat. Now, he thinks longingly as Gabrielle lets Joxer inch closer to her, if only he can have as much luck with the Warrior Princess himself.

His unspoken answer comes when Xena strides pass him and slaps him in the chest with the dead fish. "Get cooking," she demands, continuing pass where Joxer is almost cooing over Gabrielle. Autolycus glances at the almost couple, then follows the woman on which he's set his own gaze, muttering. He's a master thief and does many things, but cooking isn't one of them . . . yet.

The End
