"Charles?" he speaks his name in that low, rich voice of his that's almost lilting and always instantly demands Charles' utmost attention, immediately pulling away from his students and the rest of the world.
"Erik," he acknowledges in turn.
He smiles down at him, and Charles realizes again how easy it is to lose himself in that sweet smile. "Must we be so formal today?" he questions. The gesture he makes with his hand draws Charles' eyes to his upturned palm in which a crystal, champagne glass sparkles and gleams. As he watches, a blue and green liquid swirls inside the small goblet, but soon, it's much more than mere liquid.
Charles blinks rapidly, startled by the revelation. "Look," Erik whispers so no others can hear, "what I am offering you." The blue and green remain in the glass, but they are no longer mere liquid. The world sits in the glass held in Erik Magnus Lehnsherr's hand, the world which he is offering to him.
"E-Erik -- " His voice shakes as he fights for control. He knows what he must say, but at the same time, a part of him is crying out that this can not possibly be real! Erik can not have the world in a bloody glass!
Even if he did once hold Charles' whole world in his own heart.
"Professor? Professor, are you okay?"
Charles blinks rapidly again. Erik and the world swirl. He fights to focus on reality, on his own breathing, on whatever is truly happening here . . . Jean Grey comes into his sight. The girl is smile patiently at him as she expectantly holds her test out to him.
Charles blinks once more. "Jean?" he questions, his own voice now a soft whisper. So it was all a dream. Of course it was, Charles, you old fool. Erik is capable of many things, but not of shrinking the world down into a damned glass! Even if the thought did fit perfectly with his love's megalomania, such was just simply not possible. Here he was dreaming insane possibilities in the very classroom where he was always after his own students to pay attention. He should find a way to reprimand himself.
"Professor," Jean calls to him again, her pretty, young face marring with worry, "are you all right?"
"Y-Yes, Jean. I-I'm fine. Thank you," he assures while accepting her test. "You may go now."
"Professor -- "
"You may go now."
Jean ducks her head, and Charles again knows that he must reprimand himself. "I'm sorry, dear," he says immediately. "It's just -- "
Her wide eyes raise to his. "You have a lot on your mind."
He nods, thinking to himself that he really must work on the girl's telepathic shields and, evidently, reinforce his own around her.
"It's all right," she says though a light, pink blush tinges her cheeks. "We all have dreams. That's why we're here, isn't it, sir?"
"Yes." Charles turns as Jean departs. "Yes, it is." He ignores Scott's concerned look as he ponders that it is his very dream that has brought them all together here and that will always keep him from claiming all that Erik once offered. He can never give him the world, but Erik himself would have been more than enough for Charles, if only he didn't have to be the man who shapes that world for his students.
