"I can think of no better home for her than right here, Gru. You know, you've really done an amazing job with the girls and this place. I mean, look at it! You could have a million Minions here, and nobody would ever guess!" He looks at him doubly. "You don't already have a million here, do you?"
"No, but you . . . You sound envious, my old friend."
"Oh, don't worry. I don't want your Minions or your girls."
"No, but . . . A home like yours could do you and your animals well, couldn't it, Ace?" Gru asks, surveying the land he now owns and the Minions, children, and animals roaming it. The air is filled with a cacophony of sounds, barks, meows, thrills, yells, screams of delight, chattering, squawking, and a myriad of others, that he once would have hated but now makes his smile grow.
"We could. Yeah. I'm not gonna lie. But we haven't had the luck you have."
"I never had any luck when I was trying to be a super villain," Gru confesses. "It wasn't until I let Margo, Edith, and Agnes into my heart and home that things began to change for us."
"Are you really liking the superhero gig?"
"I am, yeah, and it makes the girls happier. Your animals are making them happy, too. I haven't seen them play this much or have this much fun since the wedding."
"How's that working out for you?"
Gru sighs dreamily. "Lucy's beautiful and amazing! She's off at work right now, saving Paris from some kind of terrorist attack."
"Again?"
"Yeah. I tell you there's always some one trying to start a war in this world."
Ace sighs and sinks to the ground. "Don't I know it?" A few of his animal friends run over to him and start bumping his hands and face. Ace proceeds to give two monkeys, a cat, a puppy, and a squirrel all attention at one time.
Gru watches him for a long moment before sitting down beside him. Hesitantly, he pets the animal, some kind of guinea pig thing of whose exact species he's not entirely sure, who comes up to him, but it's a hairless cat bumping his hand who really gets him to stroking. "The world is a harsh place, isn't it, my friend?"
"Yeah. You know, Gru," Ace speaks quietly, "I've saved every one of these animals from certain death."
"Da da da da da da da!" one of the nearer Minions cries. Gru waves him away.
"From human hands?"
"Mostly. People are so cruel. They want anything they can get out of an animal except the love they want to give. They're hunted, killed, and skinned for all kinds of things. There are people who will eat the meat of any animal -- or heck, even humans, for that matter. Did you know cannibals still exist?" He shudders at the memory of the last tribe he had the misfortune to encounter. "They'll grind their bones and use them and their other body parts for all sorts of weird cures that don't actually cure anything."
"You see all those dogs over there?" Gru quietly follows his friend's pointing finger. "They were all being kept in one cage in Hong Kong. People were actually looking at them alive and picking out which they wanted to eat." Ace and Gru both shudder at that.
"They were lucky you got there in time," Gru comments, watching the dogs romping with his Minions.
"Yeah. But for every one I rescue," Ace whispers hushedly, and Gru can hear his heart breaking in his tone, "there are three more I miss saving."
"Is it really that bad, Ace?"
Ace raises his gaze slowly to his friend's. Gru witnesses the truth and tears shining in his big, brown eyes. "Yeah," he answers honestly, "and I only have so much room to keep them."
The delighted squeals of his children call Gru's attention away again. Edith's riding a baby rhinoceros. Margo is covered by cubs, kittens, cats, and pups, and little Agnes hasn't let go of her new, unicorn friend yet. He watches those two especially, knowing that he owes Ace a debt he can never repay, but then his room mate from college has helped both Agnes and the unicorn. There's nowhere else safe on Earth for such a magical animal, as Ace told him already when he thanked him for letting him gift him to Agnes.
"It's no wonder we all thought they were extinct," Gru whispers.
"I think there's more of them, actually," Ace admits, "and I wish I had somewhere safe for them to go. I found them. It's only a matter of time before poachers do."
"And they'll kill them all," Gru whispers, heart hurting at the mere thought.
"Yeah. If I can't stop them."
"No." Gru shakes his head. Ace looks to him curiously as he stands. "No," he speaks more determinedly, his Minions and girls as well as Ace's animals beginning to look toward him, "if we can't stop them. Ace, my friend, I have a deal for you. You can bring as many animals as you want here to our new home -- and to your new home, if you'll have us."
Ace hollers and leaps into the air. When he comes back down, his back is to Gru, and his hands are yanking down his trousers. Just before his hands came grab his butt cheeks, Minions jumps him, pull his pants back up, and turn him back around to face Gru.
"Not," Gru commands, "in front of the girls."
"Oh. Okay. Yeah," Ace quickly agrees. The Minions release him, and he throws himself on Gru, hugging him tightly. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
He then turns to his animal children, kneels before them, and calls out. "To me, my animal brothers and sisters!" Birds swoop down from the sky while every type of mammal runs to him and reptiles slither. A huge land turtle picks Margo up and carries her with him. When they've reached him, Ace declares, "We have a new home, and it's right here!"
The children cry out with glee. The Minions cheer. Elephants trumpet their joy. Lions, tigers, and bears roar. Eagles and hawks scream. Frogs ribbit as loudly as they can. Birds of every kind sing. "AND TOGETHER, WE'LL SAVE MORE ANIMALS THAN EVER BEFORE!" Ace cries, and everybody cheers louder.
The rhinoceros releases Edith down his back. She and Margo run to hug Gru as tightly as they can. Minions cover them. Little Agnes looks to her unicorn friend, whose bucking his pink mane and whinnying. "And we'll save your family first!" she declares, then throws her arms around him and hugs him tighter than ever before.
Gru smiles, beaming, knowing he's done the right thing, and feeling the encompassing joy of his family growing more complete with every passing day.
