He knows what it's like to be lost. He remembers the feeling too well. When he was cast out of Heaven without a friend, without even a link to his Father, he thought he might lose his mind. He almost lost himself, but then he found, for the first time, a true friend.

Dean didn't have to be his friend. He'd lifted him from Hell not out of his own choosing but because that was the last order he received from his Father. The Winchesters didn't trust him at first but felt loyalty to him because he'd saved Dean. Thinking back, he's often wondered if perhaps that was why his Father wanted the boy saved.

But the saving didn't stop there. Dean saved him many times from himself and from things he couldn't understand, some things he still doesn't. Every time the world looked lost, he saved him. He stopped the apocalypse his brother started. He saved him when he didn't deserve it. He made him whole when he didn't even realize how lost he was.

But now, he's lost again. It seems like he's been here forever, drifting among the clouds. The other Angels are happy to be back. He should be, too, but he can't stop watching the Earth. He can't stop remembering what it was like to be one of them, and every time he sees something beautiful in Heaven, he just wants to share it with the mortal who saved him.

He just wants to share it with Dean. He wants to show him the insides of the clouds -- they do taste like cotton candy -- and the streets paved with gold. He wants him to meet their Father. He wants him to understand his love.

He drifts from day to day among the clouds, among the many houses of Heaven. He visits the rest of their family, and every time Bobby, John, or Mary asks about their children, he assures them they're all right. They have to be all right, he knows, because the boys haven't reached him yet. They can't go to Hell again. They've earned their places in Heaven a thousand times over.

He feels their Father watching him, lifts his gaze, and is gifted with a kind smile. He knows he's loved. He knows things are as they should be, now that the All Father is back on His throne in Heaven. But, still, he's rambling. Still, he's discontent.

Still, he's missing Dean until, one day, when the All Father speaks his name. He looks up, and there, at last, is the mortal who saved him what now feels like eons ago. He rushes to him, his sandaled feet bouncing on the clouds. He sees the look on Dean's face and knows he doesn't see him, doesn't understand yet. "Dean!" His dearest friend turns to look at him, and his face breaks out into a smile.

Castiel clasps his hands upon reaching him. "Cas," Dean asks, looking around, wide eyed, "is this -- "

Castiel nods eagerly. "Yes. Dean!" He searches for words. There's so much he wants to tell him, but he doesn't know where or how to begin. Instead, he settles for smiling and telling him earnestly, "Welcome."

Then, together, they're flying from cloud to cloud. He's showing Dean all the treasures of Heaven and all the family members he's missed for so long. He's showing him everything he's been waiting to share with him, and smiling at him, looking at him sideways, his hand still clasped in his, Castiel knows the wait has been worth it. Everything truly is now as it should be.

Neither he or Dean is lost. They're both found here in Heaven and here together. They're freed from the troubles of the Earth and those that once plagued Heaven. They're free together, and as the bounce on clouds side by side, Castiel's heart swells. This was how it was meant to be all along. This is his happily ever after, as the old stories go. This is his Paradise.
