"What are you waiting for?" Perhaps he's had just a little too much to drink tonight, or maybe he's simply fed up with playing this game they've been calling friendship. It's true he's never had a real friend like Clark before, but friends don't burn friends the way Clark burns him every time their hands touch. Friends also do not make friends' hearts soar as his does whenever Clark hugs him.

It's been too long since Clark has touched him. It's been far too long since he's felt those strong arms envelope gently around his body with the promise of a relationship that will never end and only get better as they grow older together. For a while, he believed the silent promise of that friendship he sees from time to time in Clark's sweet smile and the way his sensual, blue eyes light up so full of life when Lex makes him smile.

But he knows better. Friendships, as rare as they are, still don't last. Every one disappoints him. Every one leaves him. No one stays to love him, and Clark won't be any exception.

Clark slowly puts his drink down. Lex swallows hard. He's got his attention now certainly, but he's not quite sure he should have said that. Now he will drive Clark from his life. He's always known it would happen eventually. Clark would leave him, or Lex would drive him away from him. He destroys everything he touches, after all, and Clark is certainly the brightest and treasure he's ever touched.

He's going to miss him. He's going to miss their friendship, such as it was. He's going to miss that sweet, sweet smile, but then, why is Clark still smiling at him as he comes closer? There's a twinkle in his blue eyes, a twinkle more mischievous than any Lex has ever witnessed in them before. He reaches up and adjusts his collar. He quickly takes another sip of his drink, but the burn of the scotch is no longer reassuring.

"What am I waiting for, Lex?" Clark counters, reaching his table. "You tell me." His mouth opens in a broad grin; his big, white teeth seem almost to sparkle in the lights of Lex's night club.

Behind both men, Chloe shakes her head and looks at her new, red ring. "Sorry, Clark," she mutters, "but somebody had to do it. You two were gonna grow old playing that game." A grin bursts across her face as Clark plants both of his hands, palms down, in front of Lex and leans closer. She wishes she could hear what he's telling him. She can only imagine, though, as Lex's lips work soundlessly.

But then all the club knows what's happening as Clark leans closer and presses his lips to Lex's. The musicians literally skip a beat on stage. Whispers run like wildfire through the crowd. Everybody wants to know who Clark is, but nobody will know the secret. Chloe pockets her ring and walks away, grinning like the cat who ate both birds. She looks back only once before leaving and smiles triumphantly at the present she's given her best friend, whose tongue can barely keep up with Lex's passionate onslaught.
