She gasps, her heart sinking lower than her green boots, when she opens her door to her secret lover's beautiful face streaked with blood and marred by fresh bruises. "Not again!" Ivy cries, and all the plants in her apartment instantly droop. "Why do you insist on exposing yourself to him?!"
Harley's eyes won't meet hers. Her face is lowered, and her voice so quiet and broken that Ivy almost doesn't hear her answer, "'m sorry, Red. It's my fault."
"No! No, honey, it's that bastard's fault!" She reaches out to her and pulls her back into her apartment and away from the cruelty of the outside world. Her arms and vines both wrap lovingly around her.
"You're the only one who loves me!"
As Harley starts to cry, Ivy gently kisses her forehead. "Now that is true, sugar," she says gently, kissing the single spot on her pale cheek that isn't marred by blood or bruise. "Stay with me, Harley," she pleads, knowing she will for a while but not nearly long enough. One day, she swears, she's not only going to find a way to keep all of Mother Nature safe from the world. She's going to find a way to keep this sweet girl safe, too, and kill the Joker, but for now, all she can do is hold her love as she weeps.
