"Easy, Kat," the old, tabby cat stretched across the redhead's shoulders mews. Gently, he kneads her shoulders through her black leather trench coat. "You don't have to blast them. They'll move in a moment."

"Ah jest di nae knae what their bloody hang up is!" the feisty Irish woman exclaims, her emerald eyes flashing. "They need tae soddin' hurry up!"

"We haven't got any appointments today," Captain reminds her gently, his long, striped tail swishing. "No reason to rush."

"There's always a reason tae rush, Capt'n! There's always somebody needin' our help, an' these bualadh craicinn amadán are keepin' us from 'em!"

She slams her hand down upon her horn again, blaring at the stuck traffic. "I din't see a wreck or any bualadh craicinn t'ing else fer 'em tae be carryin' on 'bout!"

Suddenly, several other horns start blaring. Both woman and cat crane their necks to see what's happening. Kat barely spots the top of a familiar, shaggy, and brown head slowly ambling through the long line of vehicles. "What th' damnú aír is that amadán doin' now?!"

It's at that time that whatever had blocked the traffic ahead finally moves. Cars, trucks, and vehicles of all sizes instantly begin to accelerate. The scrawny man jumps out in front of a SUV, waving his arms frantically. The driver slams on his brakes.

Kat begins to inch her car forward, still watching the scrawny man. It's hard to believe the guy is another Pet Detective, like herself, but that's what her one human ally, Doctor Tregarde, has told her. It's also the only reason why she hasn't lit up his sorry life yet.

Captain's ears swivel back and forth. One of the younger dogs in the back seat barks. "Hush," he tells him, kneading Kat's shoulder a little more sharply. His tail lashes out at the air before tapping his best friend's cheek. "Kat, I hear something."

"O' course ye hear somethin' -- "

"No. Not like that." He shakes his furry head, a habit he's picked up from her and her grandfather. "It's . . . " His irises narrow, and he stops kneading as he listens more intently. "It's quacking!" His tail lashes again.

"Quacking?" Kat repeats in disbelief.

"Aye." He turns around on her shoulders and looks out the window again. "It's coming from over there with that man."

Kat switches lanes. A car behind her blares his horn. "Kat," Captain warns in her ear. She lets the driver swerve around her, but not without finger saluting him out of her window.

"Only fer ye, Capt'n," she mutters.

"We don't need the distraction right now," he returns, pricking both ears forward. He leans his head out of the window.

"Be careful!"

"I am. He's got ducks!" His tail whips out with his excitement.

"What di ye mean he's got ducks?"

Then she, too, sees them. The scrawny, little pain in the ass human is actually trying to lead a flock of ducklings and their mother through their traffic that has now picked back up to normal. Vehicles are flashing around her as their drivers drive, as always they do when the traffic is flowing, like they're on a race track.

The mother duck squawks and ruffles her feathers. She throws out her wings just as the man jumps in front of the transfer truck that's barreling down on him and the ducks. He closes his eyes, knowing the truck doesn't have time to stop, and braces for the impact as the mother duck runs her ducklings out in front of Kat's stopped car.

"That's it," Kat growls, slamming her car into Park and jumping out of it. She throws her arms into the air, and explosions ripple up and down the highway.

Ace cracks one eye open just in time to see the big rig go up into flames. It incinerates on the stop, leaving only ashes to drift back down to the pavement. Ace starts to hurry the ducks along but stops again, seeing the beautiful but ferocious redhead he's witnessed in action before standing just a few feet from him. She's out of her car, looking directly at him, and a quick glance around them confirms for Ace that every other vehicle on the road has also gone up in smoke.

People on the sidewalks are screaming. "Kat," Captain warns again, tail lashing.

"They can nae prove anythin', but I should send their bualadh craicinn asses up in smoke, too! WHAT ARE YE LOOKIN' AT?!" she snaps at the man she's heard called Ace. "HURRY UP, CHOMH TIUBH LE BALLA BRÍCE!"

Ace scoops the mother and her ducklings into his arms and literally runs for his life. He knows she'd never harm the ducks, but he expects at any second to be exploded. He doesn't stop running when he hits the sidewalk.

Smirking, Kat slips back into her old car, shuts her door, and drives on down the road. She looks back in her rearview mirror, sees a couple of gawking humans still watching her, and waves her fingers. They pop into ashes. Ace screams, ducks, and keeps running. Kat smiles, a deadly smile, her emerald eyes glistening. "Let tha' be a warnin' tae his ass."

She turns her music up louder as Captain shakes his head wearily. Ah, Patty, he thinks, our girl's never going to learn patience. He doesn't say anything else aloud for the moment not because he's afraid she might harm. He knows Kat would gladly forfeit her life before ever allowing harm to come to any animal, but he doesn't want to hear any more cussing this morning either.

He lays back down on her shoulders, closes her eyes, and is soon fast asleep. His whiskers twitch in his dream. His furry lips curve into a sweet smile. She believes she can teach that man a lesson, but his instincts tell him that, one of these days, it's actually going to be Ventura teaching his Kat a lesson in love, passion, and purrhaps even kindness. The tip of his tail twitches as he looks forward to that day.
