The knock on his door surprises him. Almost no one comes to visit an old teacher unless they're trying to sneak into his yard to retrieve a ball that went too high or too far. Even then, they certainly don't come knocking, but the knocker is insistent. Slowly, almost reluctantly, George makes his way to the door. He opens it a crack and stands there surprised, his mouth open but no sound coming out.
He thought they had already said all there was to be said today. He doesn't know how the young man knew he had feelings for him when he's kept them so well hidden any more than he understands what he's doing here on his front step now. Nothing can come of whatever this thing between them is. He can not allow himself to love him and ruin both their lives. Eric may think he loves him now, but George knows his feelings will change as he grows older. He will change as he grows older, and he'll leave him behind.
He does not want that pain in his life nor does he think the pain of his improper feelings for Eric becoming common knowledge and destroying both their lives. The young man has so much more promise for a brighter future than he believes. He will not allow that future to be destroyed by something for which neither of them asked. He starts to shut the door again, right in his student's face, but Eric's quick and bars it with his foot.
"Eric," Feeny tries to say gently, "we have already said all that may be said."
"No, we haven't."
"No, Fuh-eee-ney -- "
"Hush! Some one may hear you!"
"Then let me in before they do."
"Eric, no good can come of this -- "
"Man, you obviously don't know what a great kisser I am! Nothing but good can come of this!"
"Eric, this is serious!"
"So am I, Fuh-eee-eee-ney!"
"Eric -- "
"Fuh-eee-eee-ney, let me in before I draw the attention of the whole neighborhood!"
George steals a glance at the houses around them. He sees no one, but that doesn't mean that they're not being watched.
Eric pouts. "I just walk to talk."
George surveys him with a raised eyebrow. "Just talk?" he repeats disbelievingly. "We already said everything that can be said. Nothing can change our circumstances."
"No. Nothing can change anything -- not who and what we are and not how we feel --, but there's something else I wanna say. I'm not leaving 'til I say it."
"Then say it."
"You don't want me to say it out here."
George closes his tired eyes for a moment and takes a deep, calming breath.
"Come on, Fuh-eee-eee-ney! What harm can words do? Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words'll never hurt me! And if you don't let me in, I'm just gonna keep standing here and keep calling your name until I get attention! Fuh-eee-eee-ney! Fuh-eee-eee-ney! Fuh-eee-eee-ney! FUH-EEE-EEE-NEY!"
George's eyes pop back open as he yanks the door wide open. "Fine. Hurry up," he commands in frustration, "before you're seen." Honestly, why on Earth does he find this young man so attractive? He's never had this problem with any of his students before! Eric may be the most handsome young man he's ever taught, but he's certainly had more intelligent ones! He's never been a man drawn to only looks before.
Eric steps in, and his teacher swiftly slams the door shut behind him. He's contemplating locking it when Eric steps up to him. He turns to meet him; Eric pushes him unexpectedly against the closed door. He touches his lips to his gently at first and then with more determination as Feeny tries to push him away. He murmurs something against his lips, but Eric won't let him go, especially when he thinks he makes out the words "improper" and "not right".
His tongue sweeps into Feeny's mouth, and as his tongue strokes his, George's knees almost collapse beneath him. Eric's young body is there to catch him there, and he keeps him standing, pressed against the door, as he kisses him harder. He pours passion into their kiss, and Feeny knows he's doomed as his body begins to respond with a mind of its own. He kisses him back, and in that passionate kiss, he finally admits to Eric everything he's been needing to hear for so long. Despite his words earlier, despite the fact that this should not be happening between them, despite the fact that their attraction goes against everything George Feeny has ever believed, he's falling in love with Eric, too.
He feels Eric smile against his lips. He tries to force himself to pull away, but his body won't move except to continue kissing the boy back. As they kiss long and deep, George knows he's dooming them both. One day, Eric will leave him, and that is the best possible scenario that their future can possibly hold. His parents are likely to find out as is the school board. He may well be jailed for his feelings for Eric, but he doesn't care about being jailed.
He cares about losing his career as a teacher not because of the pain and embarrassment it will cause him but because there will be so many young lives he will no longer be able to reach. He cares about what will happen to Eric and others like him if he's not present in their lives to be able to help them. But every time Eric pours more passion into their kiss, Feeny finds it ever more difficult to think until at last his protests become a moan and his thoughts cease entirely. Then, and only then, is he freed to finally kiss Eric as he's been wanting to do so long.
His arms surround him; their passion engulfs them both. They're free, and although their future may be dark and full of unstoppable heartache, their present and their loves shines brilliantly! "Awesome," Eric breathes into Feeny's mouth, and for once, the old man has to agree. This boy and their love are both awesome! He only prays it lasts as long as possible, but it's already lasted long enough to make an old man very happy and complete at last.
