There are tears in her eyes as she sinks to her knees in the softly toiled earth. She trembles inside as she cups her gloved hands ever so carefully around the buds. She hasn't taken the time to work with plants or flowers in a long, long time, but she knows this is what her friend would want. She started this little garden in honor of her mother, but Mary Margaret will keep it alive for both her mother and for Johanna, who was there for her when her mother could no longer be.

The tears spread quietly down her cheeks as she remembers them both. She can bravely see the tall, white flowers for the memories passing quickly before her eyes. She remembers how full of fear and sorrow she was when her mother passed. She recalls well how she drew strength not just from the knowledge of what her mother would want her to do but also, and sometimes more so, from the woman she'd once mistaken for just a servant. She remembers the cruelty she'd shown her as an unknowing child and the kindness with which Johanna had always repaid her.

Her mother's words when she reprimanded her ring in her ears now. She couldn't possibly have known then how important Johanna would become to her. She hadn't even known she was sick, from all accounts given at the time, and after what she learned today, Snow knows her mother didn't know she was sick because she hadn't been sick at all. She had been poisoned by a woman whose bloodline continues to poison every aspect of their lives. She knows she has to stop her, but that will come tomorrow.

Today is for remembering and for, again, burying those she loves. Mary Margaret trembles as she works and remembers. Her mother hadn't known how important Johanna would become to her, how it was only her friendship that carried her through those first couple of years without her cherished mother. Her words hadn't been meant for just Johanna but for all people. Snow had taken them to heart, but it had not only been her mother's kindness that had taught her to be good. Johanna had been a steadying influence in her life, and if it hadn't been for her kindness and love, her life might well have turned out very differently indeed.

And yet, when her friend had needed her the most, Mary Margaret had let her down. She had given Cora the dagger for Johanna's life, and yet the heartless woman had still killed her oldest friend. A sob breaks free from the Princess' lips as she toils, but suddenly, there's another pair of hands, these wearing red gloves, working beside her own.

She looks up, questions in her eyes. Red nods, offers her a small, trembling smile, and brushes her hands softly against hers as she continues to work on the flowers. Mary Margaret smiles back through her tears. Johanna had been her oldest friend, but not her dearest. She almost stops working and grabs hold of Ruby, but she's afraid if she starts to cry now, she might never stop.

She senses movement across from her and looks up to see her husband kneeling down before her. David nods but doesn't say a word. He simply joins her in the dirt. There's somebody at the end of the bed of flowers, too. Snow knows who it is before Mary Margaret ever turns her head. Grumpy nods and grins up at her. "You're not alone, sister. Never again."

She can't stop the soft sob from escaping her. Both David's and Ruby's hands brush hers with purpose this time. Mary Margaret nods and smiles softly through her tears. She refocuses her gaze and resumes her task. The flowers look better than they ever have before with the four of them working with them, but their presence, she knows, isn't for the flowers.

They're here for her. They're here as quiet, gentle reminders. Johanna may be gone. She may have had to grow up without her mother. But she has friends and family now. She's never going to be alone again, no matter what Cora does to her, but together, they will stop her, too, and her daughter as well finally. Together, good will triumph. Together, they'll shape their future and save their world, and love, and goodness too, will triumph in the end, just as her mother and Johanna would have wanted.

The End
