He'd felt her cry long before she'd ever first uttered it. He felt it in the rain that wouldn't stop falling and in the very earth that seemed to sink below his massive, furry felt. He felt it in the chill of the wind while the sun still blazed scorchingly hot. He felt it in the very atmosphere, and when he looked at her and saw the sorrow in her beautiful, blue eyes, he wanted to cry all over again.

He'd already cried for hours. They all had, but she could not allow herself to break down. He found her in their friend's office and knew instantly what had to be done. The Goddess had to be free. She had to be able to grief without wrecking the planet, and the tides were already growing too dangerously high at the wrong times.

He'd briefly explained his plan, and she'd nodded, fighting, he knew, with every bit of her strong will and determination. He'd carried her away from the world, out here to space itself, and even here, the very stars seem to cry with her. "Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!"

He's seen her love many men while never being honored by that love himself other than friendship. He's always cherished her friendship -- she's one of his very dearest allies --, but until now, he's never felt anything deeper for her. Now, as he watches her break, he knows it's wrong for her heart clearly did belong to Logan, but he wants to wrap her in his huge, furry arms and shield her from the pain threatening to destroy her.

Stars are dying faster with every second. She's even beautiful when grieving, and he, like so many others down below them, bears witness to the striking glow of her tears that even puts the Aurora Borealis to shame. He's never seen a thing more beautiful, never seen a woman more beautiful, never wanted to protect any one as deeply as he does her.

He made a promise to Logan long ago, and watching her now, he remembers that promise all too well. He vowed he would do everything in his power to protect her and the school if Logan ever failed to come home. That time has come now, and if he acts on what he's feeling in this very second, he will forever regret it. He'll fail the school, the children depending on them, and Logan, and worst of all, he will fail Ororo. She doesn't need another lover right now. What she needs is a friend, and he will be that friend.

So he listens as she grieves and keeps his fingers and very claws curled around the controls of the ship. She's shooting lightning everywhere. It's radiating off of her very flesh, but still, he aches to draw her into his embrace and comfort her. He waits instead, his claws embedded in the steering column, and watches.

He waits, watches, and listens, and when at last her tears have ebbed, when at last she can do no more than take soft, short gasps of air, he carefully begins their descent. As soon as they reenter Earth's atmosphere, his phone begins to chime with messages. Every one has seen her beauty, he knows, but none living more closely than he. He'll tell her about it later, he decides, glancing back at her where she's laying collapsed in her chair, silent tears still streaking down her dark and regal cheeks.

He does tell her about it later, and he watches as she takes comfort in the feel of the earth softened by a gentle rain. He watches as the light slowly begins to return to her beautiful eyes. He admires her smile as her own breeze gently caresses her cheek and secretly wishes to be that breeze. He watches her come back to life, and when she's ready to fly again, he lets her go and sits below, admiring her still from afar and understanding at last why it was so easy for an indigenous people to believe she is a Goddess. Truly, if ever a Goddess has walked among mortal man, she is Ororo Munroe, his dearest friend, now his leader, and forever the love on which he will never act.
