When the lab is quiet and Holtzmann's gone to get food or on some other errand that requires one of them to set foot in public, sometimes, Abby likes to pull out the book that started it all. She never reads the passages any more; she knows each one by heart. She flips to the back of the book instead and stares down at the familiar figure. She still sees Erin every night -- she dreams about her every time she dozes off, which is why she doesn't sleep more often --, but it's not the same.
Nothing is the same. There are still bullies. There are still people trying to dash their dreams. That's nothing new. Nor is the feeling of being so alone which even Holtzmann can't always ease. Abby sits there with tears in her eyes, remembering how things used to be and reminding herself again and again that is Erin who walked away and turned her back on their dreams, turned her back on her.
Abby sits there in silence, tracing the familiar figure in the book jacket photo, until she hears Holtzmann returning. Then she shuts the book quickly and slides it back into hiding. It's back to work as always, back to working on a dream she now shares with some one else, but no matter how hard she works, no matter how close she gets, she never forgets. And her heart never stops aching.
The End
