He sees him standing in another room, his body held tight with the thoughts and memories keeping him pensive. He tries to reach out to him, but there's an old, familiar wall around Erik's mind tonight. He doesn't try to evade his thoughts, only to speak to him, and when he feels the wall, he knows better than to try to break it down.

So he goes in person instead. His wheelchair glides smoothly and soundlessly into the room, but he knows Erik knows he's there even though he doesn't move a muscle. He comes to a stop beside his old and dearest friend and hovers there behind him for a long time before finally attempting to reach out.

Erik doesn't move when Charles' hand brushes his. He doesn't try to push him away with his actions. He doesn't need to for his silence already tells Charles more than he ever wanted to hear again. "Come to bed." It's a soft plea, a gentle plea that means so much more.

Still, Erik doesn't move. Charles waits beside him for hours, but he doesn't make a movement or speak a word until finally Charles does. His head already lowered, Xavier pulls away, defeated. "Very well." He glides back to the entrance of the library but pauses once more. There's such a short distance between them, but it feels so long now. "You know I would do anything to change things."

Still, Erik doesn't move until he feels Charles' departure from the room resonate inside of him like a physical throbbing. Only then does he allows his gloved fingers to curl against the cool, smooth glass of the window pane through which he's been staring for hours, hoping for a better answer but receiving none, and a lone tear to slide down his cheek.

Out in the hallways of his school, a lone tear also trails down Charles' cheek. Scott sees it and turns from the group with whom he's passing through to his surrogate father. "Professor?" he asks softly.

Charles shakes his head, looking the most sorrowful that Scott has ever seen him. "Perhaps another day," he answers quietly, but he already knows. Erik's gone from him again, and no matter what they do, their lives will always eventually part again. He glides on, another tear falling as thunder rumbling outside hides the subtle shaking of the mansion's very metallic foundation.
