He walks alone through the auditorium, the steps of his boots echoing in the silence that he knows, just a few hours earlier, was filled with music, laughter, and other sounds of people having a great time. He remembers his own prom. It wasn't what he had always thought it would be up until that night, and it certainly wasn't like other teenagers' prom nights, but he supposes it had been fun nonetheless in its own way. But that had been so long ago, and tonight, despite his near immortality, he feels every inch of his age.

He told Lex this wouldn't be a good idea. He knew something would come up. It always does, from the night of his own prom and before to tonight when he had been merely supposed to be a chaperone and, he knows, for the rest of his life. Something will always come up. Some threat or another will always need to be stopped by him. There will always be lives depending on him to save them. It would be too much for a normal man, and sometimes, it's even too much for Superman.

He suddenly hears a second pair of steps in the auditorium, which somehow seems bigger tonight than it has in years even though he knows it hasn't been renovated. The school puts the donations he and Lex make toward other, better uses, expanding the programs and creating more opportunities for their students rather than just putting it all into the sports department, which has always been a stipulation upon which Lex has insisted. Clark almost grins at the memory; his husband has little use for athletes, and it's no wonder, given that they've both been abused by sports stars in the past.

He turns now to face the owner of the second pair of footsteps echoing along with his own. Lex claps as he meets Clark's gaze, making Clark wonder what he's done, but as his husband smiles at him, his worries begin to ease. Soft music starts to play; Clark instantly recognizes their song. "You're late," Lex comments upon reaching him.

Clark stifles a sigh. He'd much rather just forget about all the reasons why he's always late and spend the rest of the night gazing into his love's baby blues. "I told you I would be."

"It's okay," Lex replies quietly, taking Clark's hand in his and threading their fingers together. "The most important part of the party waited for you." He begins to sway with Clark, and Clark is reminded that Lex's entire argument for agreeing to be chaperones had been so that they could finally attend a prom together and he could whisk Clark off of his "country bumpkin" feet all over again.

Clark gazes into Lex's eyes and finally feels the pressures of his day beginning to lift. Lex spins him around and pulls him back to him. As they dance slowly together to their song, the whole rest of the world seems to melt away until it's only the two of them left. Beneath the music, Clark hears another steady drumming. His smile grows as he recognizes the sound of Lex's heart beating in smooth rhythm with his own. "Thank you," he whispers, leaning down and sweetly touching the lips of the one man who's always been able to make him forget everything else with his own.

The End
