Emma watches Domino cleaning her gun, pale, agile fingers gliding almost elegantly over smooth metal. She knows the other woman doesn't like her. They wouldn't be sitting so close now if they weren't waiting for news from Washington as to rather or not the mutant hater was going to be elected President. The room is silent except for the occasional clink as Domino shifts her gun.
Emma knows the other woman is aware of her watching her, but what else is she supposed to do? She's always hated to sit idly, but right now, there's too much at stake to be doing anything much except waiting for the call and hoping for the best even though Emma already knows what's going to happen. The world already hates their people; of course, they'll elect a President who does the same.
It's no wonder they hate them, with mutants like Mystique and Sabertooth running loose, but they're not all cut from the same cloth, a fact that humans will never understand. She wouldn't be saving their asses if she still thought there was any hope of a mutant supremacy. They'll always be superior, but after the Scarlet Witch's foolish actions, Emma knows their numbers will never dwarf the humans now.
Domino shifts in her seat and raises her dark eyes to face Emma. "I never told you," she speaks softly, shattering the quiet, "but for what it's worth, I think you did the right thing."
Emma blinks, Dom's voice startling her out of her reverie. "The right thing?" She frowns. "About what? Not that I need your approval for anything."
Dom smirks. "I didn't say you did, Frost, but I thought even you might find it a nice relief to know that not every one thought you did wrong when you killed your sister."
Emma's blue eyes widen with surprise. Domino shifts her gun, looking down the barrel and checking to make sure the shaft is clean. "A lot of people don't like guns, but they're needed sometimes. What do they want us to do when we can't use our powers? Bow down and just kiss our asses goodbye? Or, as it was with you, let a bitch kill somebody we love."
Emma's mouth opens but then shuts again without an answer.
"Don't try to tell me you didn't love that boy. I've watched you over these years we've known each other, Frost. You might be even lousier than Cable at showing it, but you love your students. You couldn't just stand idly by and let your sister kill him and then kill others too, because she wouldn't have stopped at him, and it's not as though your powers worked against her. Yes, I suppose you could have done what they think is the right thing and handed her over to the authorities, but what good would that have done, really? Do you have any idea how many times I've seen a criminal locked up only to see that same person break free and go on another killing rampage? There's only one way to stop a killer, and that's to kill them. You got the job done the only way you could have. If you hadn't have killed her, she would have kept coming back until all of Generation X was dead."
Emma stares at Domino, utterly speechless. She's strove to put that time of her life behind her, but there are still nights when she can't sleep because every time she shuts her eyes, she sees Everett's still body, or she sees Adrienne gloating about killing the young, innocent life that had been put into her hands for protection, or sometimes worst of all, she sees the remainder of her students, and Sean as well, turning against her, revulsion in their eyes over how she had stopped her sister. "I . . . I don't know what to say."
Domino smirks again as she continues checking over her gun. "You don't have to say anything. I don't expect a 'thank you'." She shakes her head. "That's not why I finally told you. We all . . . " She hesitates, pressing her black lips together and lowering her gun. Looking over at Emma, she admits, "We all have things in our pasts that haunt us, things that bother us no matter how hard we try to put them behind us, and people who we love who don't always understand why we do the things we do. I guess, I just know it would be nice to have some one understand the reason why I've made some of the decisions that the rest of our world thinks are wrong, and that's why I wanted to tell you. You did everything you could for those kids. They were the ungrateful ones. One day, they'll realize what you did for them, and although it will be too late for them to show you their gratitude, maybe they'll do something likewise for somebody else. Maybe knowing what it took to save them will help them save others."
Both women look up as others of their team mates, along with a few of the newest students to join Xavier's, file into the room. Each head is down, each face clouded with doubt, worry, and their own personal problems. The women fall silent as Domino finishes her gun, but when the phone rings, Emma glances at Domino again and gives a nod so slight that nobody else in the room notices. Nobody else notices, but Dom does. She nods her own head in agreement and acknowledgement of Emma's silent show of gratitude. Then, together with the rest of their team, they face the news from Washington, knowing that they will always do everything in their power to protect those they love.
