"Prestige? I . . . I don't know, Kitty. Doesn't that sound kind of . . . haughty?" Rachel asks uncertainly.
Kitty shrugs. "I don't think so. You need to let go of the past, Rachel, if you're ever going to learn to live in the now, but using Prestige for a codename will tell people that there's something special about you, something . . . legendary even if they don't know you yet."
"But you keep saying you want me to let go of the past."
"I do. But this will give you both: It lets people know they're dealing with a legend while, at the same time, nodding to the legend that your parents were. I don't expect you to just completely shut that part of your life out, but I . . . " She sighs, chewing at her bottom lip, as she tries to figure out how to voice the rest of what she's thinking, I want a future with you.
Rachel's grin is somewhere between a radiant smile and a teasing smirk. "Still a telepath, you know."
Kitty shrugs. If she heard her, she heard her. "Well, I do," she says aloud, coming closer and wrapping her arms around her best friend's waist. "I want us to have a future together, Red, but how can we if we can't get pass our pasts?"
Rachel inclines her head in a thoughtful nod. "So . . . Prestige," she says, trying out the new name. "And what about you, Star Lady?"
Kitty makes a face. "Don't remind me. I swear I thought Rigby was going to be my biggest mistake." She touches Rachel's face gingerly. "But it wasn't. Trying to love somebody besides you was."
"So are you going back to Shadowcat?"
"I don't think so. I want something new, something that shows I've changed and where we are now in our lives. But whatever codename I choose, I'll always love you." She kisses her.
