"No time for breakfast," Chloe announces, rushing down the stairs. "I'm going out."

Her mother's back is still to her when Meredith commands, "Sit down."

Chloe looks at her in surprise. "Mom," she complains around the bite of pancakes and bacon she's just grabbed.

"Sit."

Her mother turns to face her, and Chloe sees the seriousness in her expression. She slumps down into the nearest chair and waits for her mother to announce what's been bothering her so badly this time. Yet she seems reluctant to begin the conversation now. "Mom?" Chloe prods.

"Who are you going out with? Not that Brian guy, I hope."

"No, I'm -- "

"I really wish you would see Alek more often. I know you like Brian and you say you're just friends with Alek. I think you like him more than you realize, though. I know, I know," she admits, raising her hands into the air. "Uncool Mom butting into your business," she lowers her hands slowly and looks compassionately into her only daughter's smiling face, "but I just want you to be sure you're making the right decisions."

"I want you to be happy, Chloe, and I don't think Brian's really able to do that for you," she explains. "I see how you are with both of them, and I know Brian's cute and he's older than you and he was your second kiss and all that good stuff, but . . . Alek's the one who saved us that night, and I see how you light up around him."

"Mom," Chloe finally interjects, "I'm going out with Alek."

"Oh?" Chloe nods. "Oh, good." She grabs a quick hug, snatches breakfast, and runs out the door to find Alek waiting. "Sorry I'm late."

"I heard. Your mother adores me."

"Not more than I do," Chloe assures and kisses him good morning.
