"Ezra, shugah, you look so bored," Blanche crooned, sashaying over to her newest act. "A gentleman like yoahself shouldn't be bored. Come out with me on th' town tonight." She winked at him. "Ah'm sure ya won't be bored with little, ole me on yoah arm."
"Mah apologies, madam," Ezra politely spoke, "but Ah must decline. Ah make it a personal habit not to mix pleasure with business."
Blanche's face fell, paled, and then drew tight with her fury. "What did you say?" she demanded.
Ezra's green eyes raised to meet hers coolly. "Ah said no," he translated plainly.
"Ah have nevah -- " Blanche was just starting to seethe when Coco swept into the kitchen and planted a quick kiss on Ezra's cheek.
The unsuspecting gambler blinked and began to blush, but Blanche sighed, rolled her eyes, and shook her head. "Why didn't ya just say so?" she demanded and stomped out.
Ezra gingerly touched his tingling cheek where Coco had kissed him. He could still hear Blanche fussing about her brother getting all the best men as he turned inquisitively to Coco. "Why did you do that?"
"What?" Coco asked, grabbing an apple and taking a bite out of it. "Save you from Blanche's wrath and losing your job?" Ezra nodded. Coco grinned. "I like you, Ezra," Coco admitted, "but unlike Blanche, I know not every hunk goes in for my charms." He smiled at him. "Wanna go for a ride?" he asked with an inviting smile, and Ezra swallowed hard until he clarified, "You know, just as friends." His grin broadened, and he winked.
Ezra smiled. He announced, relieved his voice didn't shake, "Yes. That would be nice." His expert conning abilities consistently proved helpful in covering his true feelings. His gold tooth gleamed. Friends would indeed be a nice beginning.
