Shrek should have seen it coming the moment Donkey begged him to keep Puss. He should have recognized the heat in their arguments for he'd certainly argued more than enough with Fiona when they'd first met. The signs were there all along the way, but still Shrek couldn't translate their heated gazes and whispered words until he rounded the corner of his little shack in the forest late one evening and found his friends doing something that was heated but decidedly not fighting.
Steam blew out of Shrek's green ears. He started to bellow as his green skin turned purple with embarrassment, but his bellow was drowned out by Donkey's hee haws of ecstasy. He turned and ran back into his shack, and it wasn't until Fiona looked at him over their children's heads that Shrek realized he really should have seen it all along.
After all, Donkey looked at Puss with the same helpless, loving, and complete adoration he gazed with at his own love and Puss returned Donkey's looks with the same knowing and loving expression his own Fiona now wore. "You look surprised," Fiona commented, coming closer.
"I shouldn't be," he admitted, his ears wriggling. He pulled her into his arms. "After all, love is grand, rather you're human, Ogre, or animal. You taught me that."
Fiona giggled. "You caught Puss and Donkey, didn't you?"
Shrek blushed. "I did."
"Here," she said, stroking his face. "Let me help you forget them," and he did in the heat of her kiss.
The End
