He stood in the doorway of the tiny bathroom, his arms wrapped around him and a pensive look darkening his handsome face. The other guys were out meditating, and April had also gone for a walk, leaving him alone with his newfound friend for the first time since they'd come to the country. Staring at Raphael's unconscious form, Casey released a slow breath to steady his nerves.
Sometimes, he still wondered what he was doing here. He was a city boy; he'd never once been in the country longer than what it took to drive through it. He was with a bunch of people he barely knew, four of whom shouldn't even exist, and yet in the short time he'd known them, he'd already come to trust them more than anybody else he'd ever known in his life.
Casey walked into the bathroom. His muscular shoulders squared as he tried to ignore the way the old walls seemed to press in all around him. Part of him still argued that he shouldn't be here, that this wasn't his fight, and he should go back to where he belonged and forget he'd ever met these green freaks.
Casey kneeled beside the tub. Reaching out, he gingerly touched Raphael's shell. His heart leapt into his throat as he heard a soft moan. He looked instantly to Raph's face, but the Turtle didn't open his eyes. He remembered the words he'd exchanged with him and again regretted every one. He raked water over his shell with gentle fingers and then almost jumped as April's voice called from behind him.
"Funny, isn't it, how they so easily inspire trust and how they can be handsome even though being green?"
"Yeah," he murmured, and then he realized what she had said. He whirled around, his eyes flashing dangerously up at her. She smiled, laughed, and held out her hands. "Your secret's safe with me, Casey."
"He ain't handsome!" he snapped. "He's a green freak, a monstrosity!" Embarrassed heat crawled up his neck and started to flush his face. "Not that I would even know what handsome is!" he added. "I ain't ever looked at another guy -- "
"Right, right," April conceded, nodding slowly and understandingly. "You just be sure to tell him that when he wakes up."
"I will," Casey growled.
April gave him one last smile, then left him alone again with Raphael. Casey was still growling when he turned back to Raph. His eyes fell upon his face. He was ugly, he told himself again, but yet, if he dared be honest even with himself, he moved him in a way he'd never been moved before. "Hurry up and wake up, will ya, so we can set that dame right?" He was falling, Casey realized, falling hard, and he only hoped that it wouldn't be too late and that Raphael would still wake up. He turned back to scooping water over him and kept him company until the others returned and Leo took up the vigil.
