At one point, he considered truly joining Voldemort. Snape wasn't evil, but he would gladly've sacrificed every ounce of his good, given anything, paid any cost, to have his beloved Albus returned to him. Ultimately, however, there was none who could best the Master of Death, neither Albus nor Voldemort.
