At the end, everything is being ripped apart. Not only are his very flesh and bones disintegrating while he's still painfully conscious and aware, but he can feel his new soul being ripped apart too. The pain is unbearable, and yet, there is nothing he can do to stop it.
His mind is going quickly, too, but he can still see Buffy, still see her blue eyes looking at him in his close to love as she'll ever feel for him. She wanted to stay with him. She wanted to be the one to die. But he couldn't let her.
He can't remember all the reasons why now, but he does remember that he couldn't bare the pain of losing her again. This is easier. All this pain, this torture, is easier than seeing her die again. He holds to her as his world falls apart. He holds to her until his very last thought, and then, with a flash of blue eyes, he sees, hears, and knows nothing more. Still, while everything else is nothing, there's a part of him that feels, a part that will always feel; that is his love for her. He will always love her.
