Her heart breaks a little with each new day. She still hasn't gotten over breaking up with Piotr yet again, or over Logan choosing Storm for his headmistress after he had promised her they were in the Jean Grey School for the future of mutant kids together. She'd always had his back, he'd always had hers, but as soon as Ororo had become available, he'd determined to bring her back to his side again instead.

Not that Kitty could blame him. She doesn't blame Logan for wanting Ororo, or Piotr for breaking her heart. She doesn't even blame Lockheed for choosing a life away from her. She doesn't blame Scott or Logan for splitting the X-Men, and she's finally come to accept that Scott never wanted to kill Charles.

She sits with her legs drawn up and her arms wrapped around her knees as another day begins. She thinks of the lessons she has to teach this day and of the loneliness that will come again when night sets once more. She sighs, lays her cheek against her knee, and remembers sitting this way almost a world away in Scotland. Those had been far happier times, so happy that it feels like a lifetime away.

She sighs again, her shoulders sagging, and wonders who she can blame. Her family will never be the same. Her heart will never be whole. Her friends, for the most part, are either dead or otherwise gone from her. She turns brown eyes glistening with tears toward the sunlight just in time to see a figure approaching. A girl she'd once thought lost to her forever now sits beside her and takes her hand in hers. The message is silent but simple: They may not know who to blame, but they'll get through this together.
