He hummed the words to himself as he headed out of his mansion to start the day. It wasn't really a song he hummed, but the words had a certain lyrical tone to them that he found rather catching, even if he did write it himself. He paused at his car and looked up at the huge place he called home. It was funny how such an expansive building could so easily impress others and yet be so cold and empty inside. At last, though, he had hope to fill it with warmth one day soon.

"Lex!" He turned, with his keys still in his hand, in surprise. He'd not heard a vehicle approach and had seen no one when he exited from the mansion, and yet, there stood Clark before him. The boy wasn't even panting, and there wasn't a car or truck to be seen. At one time, Lex would have questioned how Clark's approach had managed to take him by surprise, but now, he simply accepted it as part of Clark being who, and what (whatever that was -- he'd stopped trying a while back to deduce his secrets), he was.

"Clark, good morning." Lex smiled, and his heart gave a little jump. It certainly was a good morning. The sky was bright without a cloud in sight, and the birds were singing. Best of all, his day had not really began yet, and here already was the smiling face he'd awakened to instantly have in his mind's eye already gazing at him.

Clark's eyes shone with excitement, and his smile was broad and eager. But then, as usual, he started asking Lex about one of LuthorCorp's secret projects and a certain member of Lex's staff. Lex hid nothing and answered each question Clark asked, but with every answer, he grew more solemn inside.

He watched those eyes as they spoke, those beautiful, bright, and shining pupils, and remembered the words he'd created during the night when he should have been sleeping. Clark was so beautiful that it quite often truly took Lex's breath away, and watching him this early morning, so full of life, eagerness, and innocence, Lex knew part of the reason he was so lovely was because he was as of yet untainted by the world that had taken its toll long ago on Lex himself.

"Can I offer you a ride into town, Clark?"

"No. No, I'll walk, but thanks, Lex." He shot him another of those heart-rending, beautiful smiles. "Thanks for everything."

Lex looked down, idly jingling his keys, and he knew before he looked back up, Clark would already be gone. With no sign of horse or vehicle in sight, Clark would have still disappeared. He was the faster "walker" Lex had ever known.

Lex looked up, and sure enough, just as he'd known he would be, Clark was gone. Still, the image of his beautiful, smiling face stayed in Lex's mind all the way as he drove himself to LuthorCorp. He remembered how beautiful and shining he had appeared. He recalled the glow of his joyful innocence and, with a sigh, knew what he had to do, or rather, not do.

He reached his office, commanded his secretary to hold his calls, locked the door behind him, sat at his desk, and steepled his fingers together. It took only one more moment of remembering the beauty he had witnessed before his determined resolved and Lex unlocked the bottom drawer of his desk. Into it he slid a simple, pink envelope with a not so simple message. He shut it, locked it, and sighed again.

It would be yet another year at least before he could give Clark any valentine. He would not be the one to steal away his love's beautiful innocence. He would not taint his purity but would instead help him in all the ways he could, including adding his sonnet for him to the long list of things he might well never say, top and most important of which would always be, I love you. He closed his eyes for a moment, pictured his beautiful face again, and finally started his Valentine's Day.
