"Clark, I didn't just ask you here tonight to have dinner."
"You didn't?" Clark wondered why his mouth was so dry as he stared across the flickering candlelight into Lex's deep, blue eyes.
A smile curved Lex's lips, but even Clark could see the danger therein. "No. I have a proposal for you."
"A proposal?" Clark gripped the table underneath its cloth. As much as he loved Lex, he wasn't sure he was ready to contemplate marriage. He hadn't even graduated high school yet!
"Yes." Clark felt the air flee from him and relief rush in as Lex revealed a folder and slid it and its contents across to Clark. "I would like to make you my partner," he said, and this time, Clark didn't see the danger in his smile.
Lex beamed across the table at Clark. He knew the boy was nervous, but he was also determined to show him he had nothing to fear from him. He did have another proposal to make one day, he thought, lightly tapping the bulge in his breast pocket where a certain, small box lay, but that proposal would have to wait for another night. It would wait until Clark had come of age, until he had graduated high school, and until he fully trusted him, but one day, Lex would reveal their love to the world and gladly claim Clark as his husband. For now, he waited with a content smile.
