He sighs as he stares out at the galaxy around him. It's a beautiful sight, but it's lonely, too. He thinks every day of returning to Earth, but he knows there is neither happiness nor peace for him to find there. He can not be with his love for his students will always drive them apart and never once believe that he doesn't want to bring harm to him. He can not save the world or his people; God knows he's tried more than enough.
He's earned this break, this rest. In space, it is lonely, but there is no one there to hurt him, no one to accuse him of doing things he hasn't done or fear him before he even opens his mouth. There is no one to judge him not for being a mutant or a man of ideas. There is no one to bother him. He is alone, but whereas that should bring him peace, right now, it's only bringing him heartache.
He leans back in his chair in the observatory booth of his asteroid that is supposed to be home and closes his eyes. His left hand rubs his temples, but he knows there's nothing he can do to get rid of this headache. It's one he suffers far too often, and there is no cure that he can give himself.
Memories tug at his mind, and at last, he lets himself go to them. He remembers the first day he met Charles, the very first impact he made upon him, and the fling that soon followed. Their love that was acted on was far too short, but his love for the man who is every bit as determined to follow his dream as he once was his own knows no bounds. That is what will never let him rest in peace.
Even out here in the galaxy, he can not forget Charles, and for that, in a way, he is glad for he never wants to forget the touch of his hand, the way he actually felt safe, content, and whole in his arms, his gentle smile, his laughing eyes, or the sweet, wonderful taste of his lips. Erik has never known anything that tasted or felt better and knows he will never know another love like Charles'.
He rests in his chair, finally giving sway to some of his favorite memories of loving Charles. A gentle smile starts to curve his lips but then stops when he feels a power tugging at his defenses. He touches it back only once before he identifies it as the very man whose presence already will not leave him be. His defenses fall. He lets him in, and for a little while, as Charles' mind caresses his, he is neither lonely nor sad any longer but almost whole again.
