She remembers, standing on the brink, how she used to think a hug could solve any problem. She used to find Xander crying after his parents had hurt him again and hug and hold him until his tears stopped. He used to find her hiding and crying in the dark shadows of Sunnydale's school, and he'd hug her until her tears ceased flowing. One could even almost say it was a hug that stopped her from destroying the world.
Yet, now as they stand together, hands touching, and watch the smoke pluming from the crater where their homes used to be, she knows a hug will not solve this problem. His love is dead, and she knows he's hurting although he hides it well. "Xander," she speaks as they turn to head back to the bus.
He shakes his head, tears in his eyes. He can no longer speak, no longer hide. She throws her arms around him and hugs him tightly. A hug won't solve this problem, but that and being by his side for the rest of their lives is the best she can do. She smiles as he hugs her back and knows, somehow, they'll live again.
