He watches them talk in the town meeting. He watches them and thinks of how not a single one of them has asked him if he is okay. They want his help constantly. They want him on their side. Emma may care a little for him as she cared for his son, but in truth, none of them want him in their lives any more than he wishes to be in them.
And yet . . . Yet, Rumpelstiltskin is no longer too proud to admit, even if only to himself, that he has envied these people. He has envied Snow White and Prince Charming their happiness, their children, their friends who will so quickly lay down their lives for them, and now their chance to raise their son. He has envied Emma and Regina both as they have grown closer to Henry and cared for the lad as he wished with all his dark heart that he could have done for his own son. He envies them their families and their love.
He hears them name their son, and for a moment, closes his eyes and then smiles as he is expected to do. They have not asked him for permission to honor Bae, but he understands that naming their child after his is all about honoring him. They mean no disrespect. They also do not mean to pry, and never would they ask for his thoughts on this or any other subject that did not endanger their precious lives.
Their son now shares the same name with his son. They hold their son whereas he will never get to hold his again. They kiss his head and watch him coo. The whole diner adores him. He will grow to be loved and find his True Love. He will have his happiness.
Rumpel feels a soft, gentle pressure on his arm. He looks down at the hand touching him so gingerly and then up to its owner, and when he smiles at her, it is a genuine smile for he is always happy to be with his Belle. Somehow, no matter what else is going wrong in his life, simply being in her presence is enough to make things better.
She loves him, he remembers with glee, and she has agreed to be his wife. He may not have his son, but he has his True Love. Gazing into her eyes, he hopes with all his heart that they will finally have at least a portion of the joy the Charmings share. He's lived long enough. He's sacrificed too much and never stopped trying for long. He's done so much, trying to reach his son and his True Love.
"Shall we tell them?" Belle whispers.
"Let's not, dearie," he replies in an even more hushed tone. He pats her hand. "This is their moment, but we shall have ours." He smiles at her, and she smiles back. In the return of her smile, his own pain lessens, and suddenly, he is no longer enviousness. Let Charming have Snow, and she him. Let Regina and Emma have Henry. He has Belle, and she will fulfill his world, giving them both endless and well deserved happiness. He leans forward and kisses her, not caring who sees. She is his, all his. He will not lose her. He will not share her. But together, they will live happily ever after at last.
