He's a Knight rescuing his fair love, another, younger, more handsome, and more careless Knight, from the snapping, flame-breathing jowls of a deadly dragon when some one calls his name. George squints at first against the bright light of the dragon's fire, but when the damsel calls his name again, he's forced to realize that the light he sees is no fire at all but rather, merely, the bulb in his classroom. He has to struggle a moment to refocus his gaze. The second thing he sees, after the mist has cleared from his fiercely blinking eyes, is Topanga Lawrence's bright and expectant face. "Yes, Miss Lawrence?" he manages.
The girl is practically beaming while squirming in her seat. She seems about ready to explode as she spurts out, "There were no Knights in the 18th century, Mister Feeny."
Laughter fills his classroom, turning George's aging face a bright red that makes his students giggle even more. "I am quite well aware of that fact, Miss Lawrence. I merely made that slip to see who was paying attention." His eyes zero in on Eric, where the boy sits in the classroom's back, already madly scribbling a note. "Mister Matthews, if you are ever to hope to become a teacher, you must pay attention in class, and surely you, too, know that the last Knight disappeared around 1519."
George walks boldly to Eric's desk and snatches up the note he's just written like clockwork. "The classroom, Mister Matthews, is not a dating service, and these children are several years younger than yourself."
It's Eric's turn to squirm in his seat. All of the students think that he's nervous because Mister Feeny has caught him misbehaving yet again, but in truth, he's fighting to keep from laughing. His brown eyes twinkle merrily as he looks up at George, who winks, where only he can see him over the top of his note.
"Aren't you going to read it aloud?"
"Hmm? Do you have that much interest in Eric's social life, Minster Minkus?"
The blonde bushes and slides lower in his seat. "It's just that you always do," he murmurs.
"Very well. You are hot," Mister Feeny reads. The class resumes laughing. "Wanna meet at 5? Wanna? Really, Mister Matthews?" He fixes Eric with a pointed frown. "I know very well I have taught you far better grammar than this." He crumples the note, and Eric smiles, knowing that means they'll meet at the arranged time. "Once more, I will remind you, Mister Matthews, that this classroom is not a dating service. If you persist in treating it as one, I am afraid I shall have to select a different teacher's aide and send you on your way. Now, read the next chapter for us."
Eric does so obediently, and only the two of them know how his voice makes Feeny melt inside. This time, however, George is careful to keep his attention focused on his class; their daydreams will have to come true later.
