"You're actin' weird today," she says, eyeballing him over her bowl of frosted sugarpops.

"That's because I have just killed five people."

She arches a single, thick, and bushy brow as he sits down across from her. The statement isn't even said in Wolverine's normal voice, intoning even more in his sidekick that something is dreadfully wrong with him. She flashes him the grin that he almost always finds contagious. "What? Just five before breakfast?"

She rises before he can answer and walks to the tiny refrigerator with the single, flickering light bulb in the run down apartment they're currently sharing, which they'd both agree normally was far worse than camping out underneath the stars if they hadn't needed cover last night. She grabs a coke and a beer, then returns, popping the top of his beer, setting it before him, and settling in across from him to wait however long is necessary, this time, for him to spill the beans. They never know how long the wait will be, but they both do know that he will spill the info -- and she'll help him through whatever it is again this time. Her pink, bunny slippers wink up at them both, grinning with the knowledge that this is just one of the things that makes them so perfect for each other.

Ah watch her sometimes, when she doesn't know Ah'm lookin'. Ah watch her fly through the blue sky, sometimes seemin' even t' chase th' sun. Ah see th' elation on her beautiful face, an' Ah remembah. Ah kind o' like mah life now, but when Ah first came to th' X-Men, Ah hated it. Ah hated everythin' about it, hated bein' a mutant, hated bein' me, as mixed an' messed up as Ah was.

That hate wan't all about mah mutancy, but she was th' first one t' make me realize that mah mutant power could be a gift instead o' a curse. She was th' second one, after ol' Charlie, t' give me any real hope about mah power, th' first one to make me see its possible benefits, th' first one to make me love mah life.

Ah remember that day on th' riverbank so clearly. Ah can still hear every sound she made in that delicate, liltin' voice o' hers. Ah can still feel her touch, still feel her body pressing so closely against mine, still feel her hand in mine. Ah grip mah windowsill as Ah watch her. Ah wanna feel that again.

Ah've been wantin' to ever since that day, an' it ain't just about th' power she gave me, or even th' happiness. Okay, maybe it is th' joy, 'cause th' joy didn't just come from her friendship or from th' power to control nature or even from havin' some one trust me so much. It came from bein' so close t' her. Ah crave touch, but Ah crave hers more than anybody else's, even Remy's. She's th' one Ah want, th' one Ah've loved ever since that day, but Ah just don't know how to tell her.

Ah sigh, lower mah head, an' turn away. Don't reckon it really mattahs, 'cause even after all this time, if Ah did get to touch her again, it'd be for too short a time. But then, too, Ah can't help thinkin' that a lifetime touchin' Stormy every night, every day, every moment still wouldn't be enough.

It's good to be back home with her first team, who have always been more of a family to her than any one else. It's good also just to be back in the city, to feel the energy and excitement of New York pumping through her veins. She's spent the day with her family, revisiting all her old, favorite places, and for once, neither Magneto, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, aliens, or the government have arisen to end the beauty of their day, a day kept beautiful, she's sure as she saw clouds chased away that morning, in no small part by her beloved Ororo, who's been steadfastly by her side since she returned.

They've been through the mall, to the skating rink, and even indulged her in beating most of her team mates at her favorite arcade, whose owner, thankfully, no longer remembers banning her and Douglas Ramsey years ago because they were better than any machine he'll ever have. They've been through the gardens and the zoo. Most of their team mates have fallen out of their non-stopping parade through New York somewhere along the day's journey, and those who remain have gone to different parts of the museum.

Now, she and Ororo are alone together, and it feels so great to have her lover's arms draped peacefully around her. She wants to do something else, but they're in a tour now while their guide drones on about high art. Kitty's never really noticed the difference between high and low art -- until Ororo slides her out of the museum and takes them into the sky.

Kitty gasps at the sight of the setting sun, its golden rays bathing the entire city. She barely has time to breathe, "Now that's art," before Ororo's kissing her and whispering to her how beautiful she is. Kitty sighs, happily melting in this, her favorite, and happiest, moment of her life thus far.

She slides into place behind him on his bike like she's meant to be there. Her legs lean against his, matching his muscular curves perfectly, and her arms wrap around him without thought. It's only after they're flying down the road, the machine roaring between their legs, that she realizes what a mistake this was. She only wanted one more trip down the road on a magnificent motorcycle, but this isn't right.

This isn't the man with whom she's supposed to be, and Ororo realizes, as tears flood her eyes and the blue sky suddenly darkens to black, that the only reason why she really wanted to mount a bike again was because she missed the days when she used to ride with Wolverine. She misses those rides not because of the bike or the wildness within her to which it called or the greasy foods in the places Logan would stop or even the adventures they shared together on his bike. She misses the motorcycle, because she misses its rider. She craves motorcycles, because she needs the first man she knew who really loved the metal beasts.

Thunder rumbles as Nathan and Ororo continue their ride together. Her gentle hands delicately, and for the first time uncertainly, touch his chest. Her face presses close against his back, and as lightning streaks across a sky that had once, just scant minutes before, been perfect, he knows she's crying.

He knows she's crying, and he almost cries himself. He thinks for a moment that he should hunt down that Wolverine and beat some sense into the bastard until he comes back to the wonderful woman who loves him. The man's an idiot, Nathan knows, to have thrown away such a treasure as Ororo. It's hard to find love and even harder to find a woman so brave, bright, powerful, and true.

Suddenly, Ororo's not the only one with tears in her eyes. He tells himself it's the drops of rain that have began to fall from the darkened sky but knows it's not even as he hardens his eyes and stops his own tears from falling. The rain continues pelting in his heart, though, as he thinks of his own Domino. He guns the motor, and they speed even faster down the road of life.

Her fury grew when she reached her jeep to find herself still alone. She flew into the driver's seat, swearing that she really would leave the team for good this time for none of them had even cared enough to follow her. Where was the Ragin' Cajun who swore he wouldn't leave her alone now, when she was on the verge of collapse?

Yet, as she dropped into her driver's seat, Rogue saw a scrap of paper on her steering wheel. She would have thrown it away if not for the familiar scribbling. Leave if you must, chere, but I'll never be done with you. Her green eyes sparkled and shimmered with unshed tears as, from the note, fell two playing cards: the very two she'd expected to find, the Queen of hearts and Ace of spades.

She smiled as a cigar flickered to life in the garage. She wouldn't be going anywhere for, just like the man she claimed not to love, no matter how tired she grew of the world, no matter how done she became with playing the part of a hero or the team that was supposed to be their family, she, too, would never be done with Remy. She flew from her jeep but didn't say anything even as she passed by him. He did speak, however, his simple words speaking volumes and warming her heart all the more. "Glad you're not leavin', chere." She smiled. Then, she was gone, leaving him alone, but they both knew she would return.

He stands on a Scottish hillside as the lush, green land is bathed golden in bright, rising sunlight. His feet are firm, his mind determined. He'll hold steadfastly to his duty and the promise he made. He will not break this woman's heart as he has others. He will not let her die without knowing love; he will be there for her when she passes as he should have been with Maeve. His fiance calls his name. Sean turns from the sun, his emerald eyes glittering, and leaves another woman crying in moonlight on the other side of the world.

Charles sighed as he carefully stacked together yet another pile of papers. He paused and rubbed his tired eyes. There were papers to grade, tests to plan, chapters to read, and experiments to study. All that along with fluctuating powers and hormones and constantly saving the world left him exhausted and feeling at least three times his age nightly.

He looked up as his door burst open. Jean Grey raced in and hugged him. Charles barely noticed the girl's chatter about going to town for the warmth of her hug. The work may be unending, but it was surely worthwhile.

Silver moonlight washes over blue fur, and Bobby's breath steals. He wishes they didn't have to hide their love away like this as his beloved Hank turns on classical music and turns to him. He lets him sweep him into a dance and soon forgets his reasons for being upset as Hank's lips plunder his.

As the lovers make love under the moonlight, their teacher pulls away from their minds. He smiles behind steepled fingers, but then his eyes turn sad again as he turns back to memories and the longing for his own love, Erik, that never leaves him.
