Happy tried not to glower at the couple across the table, but she couldn't seem to help herself as her almond-like eyes bore holes into them. She had never been one for any kind of affectionate displays, let alone what should be kept private being made public. It was distracting, a good technique to use if you wanted to get some one's mind off of something else, and otherwise, a complete waste of time. Waiting for these people to make their move while they made out was a waste of her time.
The blonde who had been draping herself all over her boyfriend for the last five minutes and keeping him from making his move by kissing him every time he seemed to be ready lifted her head and met Happy's glare. "He's your Ace in the hole," she commented, indicating Toby who had been waiting patiently for the other player to make his move. "You should be giving him some good luck."
Happy's mouth opened, shut, and then finally opened again. "He's not my Ace." Toby started to speak, but she rushed on to add before he could say something different, "He's my friend." His eyes flicked to her, and he noted the hesitancy she used when she spoke those words.
His gaze, which he had kept unreadable for the last hour while they had been in the casino, softened as he understood her motions. She was scared to admit the truth, scared that somehow, by saying those words, it would make him slip up, mess up, and hurt her. The slip up, though, wouldn't be his, to her way of thinking; it would be her own for trusting him, for letting him, for daring to say those three, little words.
He smiled at her, for the time being completely ignoring the other pair. "Happy's my best friend," he said and felt warmth spread inside his chest as he always did when he managed to make her smile. Their eyes connected, and it wasn't until the blonde spoke again that Happy ripped her gaze away.
"It's a shame."
"What is, sweetheart?" her boyfriend asked her.
"Totally both things: that they think they're only friends and that a girl with the name of Happy can't smile more. You totally should," she told Happy. "You look really pretty when you smile."
Toby hid his own grin as his gaze shifted back to Happy. Her beautiful face was twisting as she concentrated on trying to contain the fury building within her. She hated it when people called her on her lack of happiness and thought she should be happier because of her name. That was people she just met in passing, not people that had already been aggravating her for the last forty minutes. "What do you think, Happy?" he asked, knowing he shouldn't and yet seeming to be unable to help himself. That was nothing new: He could never help himself around Happy for long. She was just too fun and easy to make mad, and so beautiful when she was angry. She was also beautiful when she was happy. He wondered just how fantastic she would look if she ever let herself be happy for long.
"I think you should all shut up and play," Happy snapped irritably. The blonde's boyfriend, taking pity on her, finally made his move, and Toby's gaze snapped back to the game.
The blonde started to speak but stopped when Toby laid down a card that she knew her boyfriend couldn't beat. "Oh, babe," she murmured, but right then, Happy didn't hear her. She was too busy watching Toby and thinking. She'd finally admitted that he was her friend, one of only three, maybe four, friends she had ever had in her entire life, but she recognized, too, something else stirring within her as she watched the blonde switch her attention from her boyfriend to trying to flirt with Toby. His attention was on the game, but Happy saw the way she batted her eyelashes, shook her blouse, and tried to make eyes at him.
She shouldn't care, she thought in the next moment. She shouldn't care how many loose women threw themselves at Toby or how many he took to bed. She shouldn't care that the girl was obviously trying to ditch the man she'd been clinging to since they first saw them simply because Toby was now clearly winning. She really shouldn't care. She knew better than to care.
But yet, as Toby laid down the final card and reached for his winnings, Happy's hand found its way to his shoulder. He looked up, clearly surprised, and grinned broadly at her. She felt something move in her stomach at the way he looked at her and withdrew her hand, but the movement had made everything clear for all there.
The blonde withdrew with a pout as toby pocketed his winnings. "Like I said, there's no way you're just friends. A guy and a girl can't be just friends."
"Yes, they can," Happy shot back crossly.
"Friends with benefits, maybe."
"Believe me," Toby spoke before Happy could reach across the table, "as much as I would love those benefits with Happy, a man and a woman can be friends only, the best of friends but still just friends." He stood to leave.
"Then do you want . . . ?"
He stopped her short, "No." He turned, with Happy at his side, and prowled proudly away. His mind was already calculating on who around them should be their next victim, but another part was very much aware that Happy was close by his side and remembered well her words and, far better, actions. They were just friends for now, but the way she'd grown possessive of him made him feel better than if he actually did take this casino for all the money it held. He tried to hide his grin but, again, couldn't help himself. It was broad and bright as day as he walked beside Happy and hoped that maybe, one day, they really would be more than friends. If she ever once let down her guard, if she ever once gave him the chance he craved, he silently promised them both he wouldn't screw it up. He wouldn't screw them up. Instead, he'd finally make her live up to her namesake and keep her Happy for the rest of their lives.
