He doesn't like to dream, not any more. He's afraid to shut his eyes for fear of what he'll see. He doesn't like remembering what happened. He doesn't like seeing, even in his mind, that thing that twisted his daughter's face, the monster who used her body and her precious, little hands to kill. He doesn't like seeing what happened, and he hates even more seeing how else that night could have been twisted, how else she could have been twisted. He hates seeing his baby girl kill, but he hates even more seeing what the beast within her does to her, body and soul.

He thanks God every day he was able to escape with her soul in tact that night. He thanks God every day for her, and he prays for her to stay safe. He took the rap, and he'd gladly take anything the Demons have in store for his baby girl as long as they never touch her again. He'd even sell his soul to keep her safe. He'd do anything for Macey.

He runs tired hands over his face. He doesn't want to shut his eyes, not even here alone in the hospital, but his mind is so heavy, his body so tired, his soul so exhausted. The drugs they've given him doesn't help, and eventually, they do lull him back to sleep. He drifts under, despite his struggle to stay awake, but this dream isn't like the rest. It doesn't start with Macey already possessed.

In fact, at first, he sees no Demons, but he can feel them. He can always feel them now. Ichabod's warned him. They can be everywhere, anywhere, even in the light of day. They can come after him at any time, or come at his baby, or at the woman who he still loves though he dares not admit it. They can come back at any time.

He can hear them whispering, hear them reaching. His flesh flinches as he remembers what their claws on his skin feels like. But then the mist parts. He is in a forest, and it is night. He knows they are here, just beyond his reach, beyond his sight. He starts to pull his gun.

"Frank!"

He blinks. "Cynthia?" he asks in surprise. The mist pulls further away, and he sees both his ex-wife and child standing at one of the turns in the road. "Macey!" He starts toward them, but a weak voice calls to him. "Daddy?"

He turns to the other side of the fork in the road, and there, alone and in her wheelchair, is his daughter. Darkness wraps around her, coiling and uncoiling from around her neck and chest. He can see fingers in the darkness, and he knows it wants her.

"NO!" he cries out, but as he starts to go toward that vision of Macey, the other form of his child calls to him again.

"Daddy? Daddy, where are you going? What's wrong, Daddy?"

His heads snaps left and right as he looks at both visions of his daughter. One is standing and smiling brightly at him as she holds to her mother's hand. Even Cynthia looks happy to see him. But the other Macey is in pain and scared. Her legs don't work, and something wicked keeps reaching for her. It snatches at her, and her eyes turn white.

"NO!" he cries again and runs for his child. "I'LL GIVE ANYTHING! ANYTHING!" he yells, not realizing that this is only a dream and he is screaming the words aloud as well as in his vision of possible futures.

The other Macey, still holding to her mother's hand, vanishes, but her parting words linger behind her in the chilling wind. "You could have had us. You could have been happy," it taunts, but he has no time for words as he takes the sword he's suddenly found in his hands and swipes at the darkness that still surrounds his child.

"LET HER GO!" he yells again. "I'LL DO ANYTHING! TAKE ME! TAKE ME INSTEAD!" But he's said the words before. He's offered himself before. It isn't him that they want. They want his daughter instead. They want the purest and best thing in his whole world. They want his baby, and he'll die gladly, fighting to save her if only his life, his soul, can give hers a chance at freedom and all that is right and Good.

"Daddy!" she cries, and for a moment, he can see her clearly. He can see into her eyes, and he knows that her soul is in place again in her body. He can see that it really is her, even if she is still in her wheelchair. Even if her legs still do not work, her soul does. Her heart does. She cries out for him, but as her tiny arms wrap around him, the dream breaks.

The mist is gone, but night has settled. He's back in his room at the psychiatric hospital, and his phone is ringing. Hesitantly, rapidly blinking back tears, he reaches out to answer it. He's still dazed, his mind a jumble of confusion, as he listens to the voice on the other end of the line and to the offer it's making.

He has a way out. He has a lawyer who wants to take his case, as impossible as it may seem. A small part of Frank Irving, however, realizes that that's not all he has nor is it, by far, the most important. He has a way out. He has a way to fight for his daughter. He has a way to quite possibly save her, and that, in the end, is all that matters.

She's his child, his flesh and blood. She's the best thing he's ever done, the best thing he's ever known. She's the purest, gentlest soul he's ever embraced, and he'll do anything, anything, to save her, even sell his soul. He smiles, although his body and insides tremble with the remembrance of his dream. He's still got a chance to save her, and he'll take it gladly. He'll do anything for his Macey, and so when the lawyer comes, he doesn't think twice. He signs the paperwork, all the while just remembering he might be able to save his baby girl, after all.

The End
