They look at each other in the flickering candlelight as Chris shuts the book. His hand hesitates on the sepia cover for a moment while green eyes gaze steadfastly into baby blues. Vin nods once, and the man in black rises without making a sound.

He lights a cheroot on his way and is already chewing it by the time he steps out onto his porch. The evening is still warm for they're in the middle of Summer, and the moonlight is bright. He rises his rifle as he looks out to his pasture.

"SHIT! DON'T SHOOT, SIR!"

Larabee's eyes gleam like steel in the silver moonlight. "This is the part," he declares from around the thick cigar in his mouth, "where you run away." He grins as the two young, wouldbe horse rustlers nearly plow each other down in the dirt in their haste to get away.

"I TOLD YOU THAT WAS HIS CABIN!"

"SHUT UP AND RUN!"

His eyes are laughing as he lowers his rifle and heads back indoors. He props his gun up at the door before continuing back to his place with Vin on the floor before his fireplace. There's no fire tonight -- no need for it --, but they've spent so many evenings already there on the floor, that it just feels like second nature to come home to it.

Vin looks up as Chris starts lowering himself beside him. He catches the look in Larabee's green eyes and chuckles softly. "Younguns." Chris flashes him a grin that says he agrees, then picks up the book. Vin settles as he resumes reading, his deep voice filling the cabin that has become as much theirs as it is his.

"It was the kind of night that makes a man feel alive. The moonlight made them feel bolder, if not wiser, and the land was calm. There was no one there to make them obey their law, and even if there had been, it wouldn't have mattered. They followed only their own rules, and on a night like tonight, anything went."

"Hmm. I like that," Vin interjects. Leaning over the book, he presses his lips softly to Chris'. Larabee answers immediately, tilting his mouth up to deepen their kiss, shutting the book, and placing it to the side.

He no longer needs a special night to feel alive. He feels alive every time Vin touches him. Desire roars in his veins in response to the sharpshooter's gentle touches, but there is so much more, too. There's power that comes only from a special kind of love, that love itself, and more. With Vin, he doesn't just feel alive. He actually wants to live, and they do, by their own set of rules and in their own brand of paradise.
