"Kiss it and make it better, Mummy," he cried as his mother rocked him. She bent and did as he requested, but he wasn't done yet. "You'll always be here for me, won't you, mummy?" When his mother hesitated in her answer, he pressed, "Won't you? Tell me you'll always be here for me."
"Of course I will, Rupy."
He removes his glasses and begins polishing them before any one can spot the wet sheen in his eyes. He watches his Slayer walk away from him again. He knows she's hurting, but unlike his mother with her gentle kiss when he was only four years old, Giles has nothing of any real value he can offer her to help. He has nothing he can do to help, not in the long run. In the long run, she'll always be on her own, and there's nothing he, or any one else, can do.
She's asked him many questions over the years, but the one she hasn't asked him is the one for which he'll always be thankful. He can't lie to her like his mother did all those years ago. He's quite certain she'd thought he'd forget, but he remembered that moment in his childhood at her funeral and has held it close to his heart all these years. He tries not to promise what he can not deliver, but that most certainly he will not. He won't promise his Slayer he'll be there for her forever, no matter how much he would like to otherwise, because he knows firsthand how it feels to be all alone in this cruel and heartless world.
He slides his spectacles back onto the bridge of his nose, but his vision is still marred. He turns back on the world and returns to his books, where he can always find answers. They might not always be the ones he needs, or wants, but there are always answers within their tomes. He sets to searching for another one now.
