Later on in his life, he will be asked when he knew he made it. He knows that already, and he knows, too, that this is that moment. He's felt good before. He felt good when Don Falcone chose him over Fish, and every time he's bested those who would kill him. He felt good when the Don rewarded him with Fish's night club and good every time his mother has praised him. But he's never felt as good as he does this very moment.
He's spattered blood. He's taken a life, and not just any life. Finally, when an asshole cut down on his mother, he was able to reap true revenge. His club is practically trumpeting with applause now, but he can hear the whispers still. No one will ever look down on him again. No one will ever look down on his mother again. No one will ever dare speak ill of her, or fail to applaud her and lift her up on the pedestal on which she belongs.
He walks to her side. She's smiling at him. He knows she doesn't realize that he killed the bastard, just that he hushed him. She kisses his cheek, and it's all there in his eyes. She's proud of her boy. He's given her everything she deserves, including a world where she'll never feel hurt again. He smiles and kisses her back. This is his moment. This is his life, and one day, together, they will reign side by side.
The End
